A fire was ignited to clean the dump on May 27, 1962, and water was used to douse the visible flames that night. However, flames were seen once more on May 29. Using hoses hooked up from Locust Avenue, another attempt was made to douse the fire that night. A few days later, a hole as wide as 15ft (4.6m) and several feet high was found in the base of the north wall of the pit.
