About this deal

As with every Junji Itou's story, the signature uneasiness and creep factor are always present, especially in the later chapters. Ito: Yes, I began working as a dental technician in around 1984, and then I began working on manga, so I was doing both for about three years... A melancholy young man who was used as the model for a perfect humanoid robot. He could not compare to its perfection and thus felt that there was no reason for him to continue to exist. After taking an overdose of sleeping pills and his heart stopping, he witnesses the spirit world and begins to produce spirit jewels from his stomach via the pylorus - a word which, in Japanese, is written with the characters for "spirit" and "door."

Ito: Hmm... This director was active in the 1970s. He's quite advanced in age now. Dario Argento, an Italian director famous for "Suspiria." I think he would film women very beautifully. Of course, this is just my own personal wish (laughs). Also, William Friedkin, director of "The Exorcist" series... He's also quite advanced in age... I don't know young directors very well. An interest in VR The ratio of panels with body horror to those with people just talking was way too low, and the gore -- while it had a couple moments -- wasn't on par with what you'd expect from Junji Ito.

Ito: Well, immortality, never dying, is something I think everyone longs for. At some point, we all wish we could be immortal. But Tomie lives her life completely as she wishes. She's haughty yet she captivates men. I imagine women have this desire to act like a princess. They envy Tomie's freedom, that's what I think... Interesting use of an escalating, ongoing plot, Strong ideas illustrated, Ito's art is as impressive as always Ito: I lived in the countryside, but I occasionally went into town. I would see ad balloons floating above the buildings, and they were symbols of life in the big city which I aspired to. Also, I liked flying saucers as a kid, UFOs. Strange, unidentified, mysterious objects in the sky. So, I combined elements which I liked and incorporated them into my work. Balloon Belly: When the jewels build up in Pii-tan's stomach faster than he can vomit them up, his stomach distends grotesquely, which is played for horror rather than laughs. Especially when he explodes. Junji Ito ( Ito): When I was very small, maybe 4 or 5 years old, my two older sisters would read Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga in magazines and I read them too. That was my first experience. I was hooked. I began reading horror manga after that.

Lighter and Softer: While still contain a lot of Ito's trademark, the story actually is much lighter on the scare and is more plot oriented. Three-time Eisner Award winner Junji Ito’s legendary sci-fi thriller is finally available in English!Nobushi: I have a question I'd personally like to ask you, if I may. What is it about the grotesque that appeals to you?

Ben K: Yes, but isn't it because you studied such words in vocational school that you had the idea? Ito: What is it, indeed. I'm not too sure of the reason. It could be that my curiosity is stronger than fear or perhaps I just have bad taste. Something which is a bit different from human, not animal either and yet exists in our world. It spreads in rumors and remains a mystery. In the past, rumors about such things as kuchisake onna 口裂け女 {an urban myth about a woman with a split mouth who kills passersby} were common. With things like that, rumors spread first before facts. It's thrilling. So, for me, rather than scary, those things were thrilling and fascinated me.Ito: "Long Dream," "The Hanging Balloons" and " The Enigma of Amigara Fault." I would say those are my favorites. I don't think I'm very good at long stories, so I don't have any which I'm personally satisfied with. Short stories are easier to write well, and I’m happy with those three. Cast from Lifespan: At the ending, it's revealed that this is what will happen to humanity as the cost of rapid technological advancement. As the paradonite stones are the souls of humans both dead and alive, using them as energy will burn out the life of the humans themselves to the point of extinction. Though, as Maruso's future sight has seen, humanity will survive this, only because they will realize this effect before too long. can save you. While there's nothing like actually holding a book in your hands, there's also no denying that the Ben K: So then, did your experience as a dental technician have any influence in the world you depicted in your manga?

Ito: Shinobu Tagashira was the director. She really likes my work and respects it. In the way she expressed the mood of the manga, told the stories, and showed the images, I got the impression that she took great care in handling my work. I think some episodes turned out even better than the original. Mad Oracle: After Dr. Suga chains poor Maruso to her bed, her psychic intuition goes into overdrive, and takes her sanity with it, until the tumor is removed from her brain..
