One major upgrade in the Go 3 is its extended battery life. The camera itself can record continuously for 45 to 60 minutes, almost 50% longer than its predecessor, the Go 2. If you place the camera in the action pod, you can stretch your recording time up to 150 to 170 minutes, while simultaneously recharging the camera. The GO 3 alone offers enough battery to last 50 minutes, with the Action Pod, you can expect 150-170 minutes of battery life. Recording at lower resolution (or using photo mode) will give you longer run time. Brilliantly, it’s also magnetic itself, which allows it to be fixed directly to lamp posts, bus stops, fridge doors, car bodies and similar surfaces. A magnetic design and accessories allow you to mount the GO 3 anywhere, providing you with a multitude of creative possibilities, including but not limited to pets, helmets and fly-on-the-wall shots. Two of the most important presets here are labeled "Video" and "FreeFrame Video," the latter of which removes all stabilization and in-camera cropping. This preset is best used by those who plan on using the Insta360 app for video editing. I found the image stabilisation struggled to maintain smoothness without introducing shimmering artefacts into clips, even when I was indulging in relatively gentle activities. FreeForm video is also worth a mention. It requires you to put together clips in the Insta360 app but captures the full circular view of the lens, not a rectangular frame. This gives you the flexibility to pull out a 1440p frame at 16:9, 9:16, or 1:1 ratios for different social platforms. Running every FreeForm clip through an editing process is inconvenient, but creators who need to deliver clips for both widescreen and vertical devices might still find it worthwhile. I also liked the natural quality to outdoor, stabilized footage.
