My camera bag is always a little overstuffed. It’s heavy with lenses and gear, but the advantage is I’m far less likely to have any single point of failure. Still, I’m always looking to lighten the load. The automatic mode intrigued me: remember that this is not a TTL flash. As it turns out, there is a tiny light sensor on the front of the flash that changes the flash output depending on ambient light. You can test this by firing the test button, then covering the light sensor and firing the test button again. As you can see in my video, you’ll notice the difference. However, I have some critiques to point out after some time of use. And I start by mentioning the opening operation of the reflector blades, which are not as smooth as you would expect, and which sometimes require two hands and a little patience. As a tribute to the timeless aesthetics that transcends time, Lux Junior presents the pure classic design and function to explore the essence of photography along with you and turn your nostalgia into tangible beauty.

Flashes have evolved immensely, with capabilities unthinkable a few years ago, turning almost into mini-computers with a rather complicated operation, and have become used almost exclusively by professionals. But it was not always so. What changed then? As I mentioned, once opened, its operation is similar on both flashes. However, both start-up time and recycling time (full power) are about half of what we get on the Lux Junior with two AAA alkaline batteries. I also thought I’d try a couple of “shutter drag” portraits, just for fun. Shutter drag, for the uninitiated, is a technique where you combine flash, slow shutter speed, and (typically) motion. The flash freezes the subject, while the slow ambient exposure creates blur or light-trails. For these two photos, I tweaked the settings to give myself a shutter speed of 1/4 sec, and then deliberately shook the camera during the exposure. ISO 100, f/13, 1/4 sec. Flash power: 1/4. Over the last few years, Godox has gained recognition – especially among professionals, by launching a set of quality models, rich in features and priced quite below their most direct competition. Just think of the AD600 Pro and AD 1200 Pro strobes for studio or location use. And, of course, the Godox AD200, extremely popular with wedding and portrait photographers. Just when we thought Godox had been bold with the Lux Junior, here’s the Lux Senior with its collapsible fan-type reflector. Once again, and I don’t get tired of saying this, sometimes the solutions for our future can be found in our past. And with this device, Godox has combined contemporary technology with the wonderful retro style of this type of flash, so characteristic of the 50s and 60s and widely used by reporters and wedding photographers from that time. After some testing using Auto mode, I chose to use Manual mode because it allows me to make incremental adjustments and play with exposure. As I mentioned before, after a while, it becomes very intuitive to choose the power level, which is adjusted so easily just by turning a dial.

Right now, you might be thinking, “why not just buy an 80’s flash and save some money?”. Well, I would think twice about putting an old flash on your current camera because they typically use a high 200-400v trigger voltage, which could seriously damage the circuits of a modern digital camera. And now you will tell me it takes 3 steps more than in the Lux Junior. And you will be correct. But you have to realise that speed and ease of use are not exactly the point of this flash. Getting the Lux Senior ready to use takes time, and there is a process. But isn’t it for the pleasure of the process that many people photograph film these days? Load the film into your camera, rewind it when it’s finished, take it off the camera, take it to a lab or develop it at home. Putting the flash ready to use also has its process, and that’s where a good part of the fun of using it lies. One of its flaws – the fact that it doesn’t communicate with the camera to give the aperture and ISO value, is also one of the main advantages of this flash, because you can use it with any brand of camera, digital or film. That is, if you change systems or use more than one system, you can keep this flash and use it in all of them.Using it indoors was just as I remembered it as a child, at birthday parties and family gatherings. Lighting conditions are no longer a concern, and despite its relatively low power, it was always more than enough for everyday use, regardless of the size of the room I was in and the distance to the subject. Inside this dial is another one, which does not control any function on the flash, being just a calculator to help determine the appropriate power level. Anyone who used flashes in the 80s will feel right at home, as the calculation principle is the same, playing with the variables aperture, ISO and distance to the subject. Actually, I didn’t pay much attention to it because after a few days of use, it became much faster just to use my intuition. If your white balance is set to auto, you might see your images having a blue tinge. Dial in Flash WB, and you’d be seeing your results looking more neutral or warm. With a positive first impression, I was keen to put it into action. The first step was putting 2 AAA batteries in, but this turned out to be a little tougher than expected. I felt like I had to be a little rougher than I would’ve liked just to get the cover off. Overall, I am having a lot of fun with the Lux Senior, and I look forward to really putting it through its paces. It looks cool, and the handling and feel are excellent. The flash, as I mentioned, can be used off-camera – both with a sync cord as well as wirelessly, in optical control mode. But even when used on-camera – as with all the photos in this article – it produces a relatively soft and pleasing look, thanks to the way the reflector shapes the light.

The Auto mode is not what the name might suggest because it is not a TTL flash. It is necessary to follow the indications according to the table in the instruction manual, as seen below. ISO I’ve noted the exposure settings in my captions, but basically, I stayed on Manual mode, ISO 250 and f/5.6, slightly varying the shutter speed based on the ambient light. (As flash users would know, the shutter speed only affects the ambient exposure, not the flash exposure which is typically much shorter than the shutter speed.) Flash power was set to 1/64. The only exception is the two “shutter-drag” photos, whose settings are also noted in the captions. ISO 250, f/5.6, 1/50 sec. Flash power: 1/64. Look and feel It can produce the right results when used in the appropriate conditions. And it’s USB-C rechargeable, so there’s no fumbling around to find the batteries for it in your drawer full of spares. It’s an incredibly good conversation starter and will give you a solid appreciation for the struggles that film-era photographers would go through daily. Would I use this as my main flash for a major assignment? No, probably not. During a recent assignment, I brought it out, and it simply didn't have enough power for dependable news work in uncontrolled environments. It would be interesting to compare this against the Godox Lux Senior, which has a lot more options and is significantly more powerful.I would turn the power switch to ON only after opening the flash to avoid accidentally triggering it while it’s closed. It’s not the most powerful of flashes, but I wouldn’t want to expose the interior to any heat the flash might generate if triggered.
