About this deal

Very few mics are good for long-distance recording. The ME66/67 does pretty well because of the high sensitivity and good off-axis rejection. They do not amplify the sound, but they are very sensitive to it. Parabolic are the true long-range mics. In any case, I think both those choices are off the table for Phil given budget and ergonomics.

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so. Another feature we love is the line of bright input LEDs along the bottom of the unit. This may sound like a minor thing, but it's so much easier to monitor levels with this eye-catching array of colourful lights than it is trying to make out what's going on in a typically cramped screen, especially from a distance. The LS-P4 will last for up to 39 hours per charge, and with the clever incorporation of a USB adapter right into the base of the unit, you can charge it and transfer its contents without any cables. It’s also furnished with a generous 8GB of internal memory, although you can expand this to 32GB through the microSDHC port should you need to. According to my inventory I own an Olympus ME31 small shotgun, which will work and tops out at 15 kHz. and is about 3x more sensitive than your ME15. I havn't tried it with birds and suspect that the Rode VideoMic Pro+ might be better, it certainly has a better frequency range though their sensitivity is nominally similar, as with binoculars, specifications only give you part of the story. The inbuilt memory is 8GB – this can capture over 250 hours of MP3 at 320kbps – but the device also supports a Micro SD card up to 32GB.It’s a bit more expensive, but the Zoom does feature four-channel recording and can be used as a four-in/two-out USB audio interface. At nearly 300g, it weighs a lot more than the Olympus, though. It also requires two batteries rather than one. I can report that the Rode mic (mono) actually provides a signal to both channels on the Olympus LS-P4. There is no need for an adapter, nor to duplicate channels in Audacity.

Sound-quality wise, I road-tested the LP-4S with some interviews I made at Real World for our feature and it handled each with some aplomb, never letting me down and even allowing me to distinguish, by position, two interviewees with very similar voices. Great sound quality, too. On a more musical note, I tried it on my acoustic piano, finding it best placed right in front for some lovely, deep and intricate results. Conclusion Connecting the audio cable allows the audio to be recorded via the camera, and monitored accordingly. Moreover, the LS-P4 includes a built-in speaker, allowing users to listen to their recordings without the need for external devices. The device is compact and portable, making it convenient to carry and use on the go. The small battery footprint of the P4 was actually a big reason for me to buy this device years ago for outdoor recordings. But the upgraded and now useful remote control app for the P5 is very intriguing and I’m still unsure whether I will upgrade or not.

Some remote control features are included courtesy of Bluetooth connectivity, with users able to remotely start and stop recording, as well as adjust levels, change filter settings or microphone directionality via a free iOS and Android-compatible smartphone app. When using 16-bit recording modes, it is also possible to use the Bluetooth connection to wirelessly monitor the audio signal at distances of up to 10m. Thank you. I'll definitely consider the Zoom products for the future. I bought the LS-P4 because I need to start with something very portable and light in weight, so I can bring it with me without an external mic, and carry it to work in my briefcase. It is also easy to use in the hand to record radio broadcasts.
