About this deal

There's some noticeable barrel distortion at the 28mm focal length and slight pincushioning at 70mm which is apparent in both the Raw files and uncorrected JPEGs.

A minimum focusing distance of 19cm at the wide end of the zoom range (a working distance of 6.9cm) up to 38cm fully zoomed in allows you to capture subjects close-up in incredible detail. Another benefit to the weight of this lens is that you can shoot for long periods of time without your wrist or arm aching, which is ideal if you predominantly want it for video. The Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens features 16 optical elements in 12 groups. There are three aspherical elements, two FLD elements and two SLD elements. The lens features a 9 blade aperture and has a minimum focus distance of 7.5” (19cm) at 24mm. As you zoom out this changes to 15” (38cm) by the time you get to the 70mm focal setting which affords a great deal of versatility shooting subjects at close range.Growing in popularity, the L-mount is based on Leica’s T-mount system, which stems from the Leica T (Typ 701) APS-C format digital camera, launched in 2014. With the subsequent launch of the Leica SL full-frame camera, the name was changed to the L-mount, with sub-categories of TL for APS-C format lenses and SL for full-frame. Bigger news came in September 2018, with the advent of the L-mount Alliance, formed by Leica, Panasonic and Sigma. This enabled all three companies to manufacture cameras with ‘interchangeable’ lenses in every sense of the word. Sigma ... recommends that Sony E-mount shooters enable in-camera optical corrections for best results (advice that we'd echo)." Sony had both native e-mount and adapted a-mount glass available from the first day that the a7/a7r was introduced. There were also dozens of full frame adapters already on the market for e-mount bodies, including fd/fdn adapters for Canon film lenses. But keep in mind that 24-70/2.8 art is not that sharp. I am a big fan of sigma after using 50/1.4 and 85/14 art, but found the 24-70 art lens soft. But in all fairness, zoom lenses at this range are never close to prime performance wide open.

Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens (Panasonic L Mount)

Frankly, I don't see a major difference with among any of the cameras for video work. I wouldn't care if you used the k01 for all your videos. True to the Contemporary line’s core concept, the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN was developed to offer the right balance of performance and portability. It has been designed to deliver outstanding image quality that rivals SIGMA’s Art line lenses in a body light enough for day-to-day use. The Sigma lens weighs about 100 grams less than the Leica version, and while this isn’t really a significant difference, it does at least seem noticeable when hand-holding the camera, since the system is just that much less front-heavy. As for the comfort and ergonomics, both feel very much the same. Sleek, responsive, smooth to the touch, with both versions of the lenses focus and zoom rings responding at nearly identical speeds. I have a question. Is it very difficult for lens manufacturers to achieve the focal lengths from 24-28 in such a lens?

Intro

For years now, I’ve been actually looking at the Sigma Quattro dp2. I’ve been so tempted to buy one…I may see if I can get a loaner in to review. It’s an older camera but there is just something really special about those foveon sensors.

Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Review: The Practical Choice Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Review: The Practical Choice

If we look at the oldish Vario f4 (a horrible lens by any standard) it’s only 42g heavier. You won’t get much lower then what Sony did with that and it shows in IQ. To top it off, the 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens does focus very closely as well. The minimum focus distance at the 28mm focal length is 7.5″ (1:3:3 magnification), while at 70mm, it is 15″ (1:4:6 magnification). This adds even more versatility to this zoom. Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens Image Quality: And once when he did not get any printouts, he told the machine some carefully chosen words and then he pulled the cable out of the outlet. Took the machine down the corridor and placed it in the elevator and pushed the bottom floor button and went out of the elevator. And down it vent. And then he went to the meeting. What you can see with both lenses is distortion up close is exaggerated and there is field curvature, so you have a “sweet spot” of focus that you have to properly utilize. The Sigma has slightly more distortion, so this effect is more exaggerated. The Tamron also shows superior contrast and resolution close up at F2.8.Despite the considerable size and weight (and cost) saving compared to the 24-70mm 'Art', Sigma claims that the design of its newest zoom is based on that of the higher-end lens, and should deliver excellent results across its zoom and aperture range. In the center, bokeh balls are almost perfectly round but as you creep out towards the edge of the images, it starts to distort slightly into more of an oval shape when shooting at f/2.8. It's noticeable but not distracting, so unless you're a bokeh connoisseur it's unlikely to bother you. It is nice to have compact L mount lens options increasing in choice. I do not enjoy carrying a lot of fast heavy glass. This lens is a great travel lens.

Since I mentioned the size, let’s get into that first. When the 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens was first announced, I was definitely intrigued but after seeing it in person, and holding it in my hands, I have to say, I am even more impressed. Currently, Sigma says that this is the smallest and lightest lens in its class. By going up a bit from a 24mm, Sigma was not only able to produce a lens that is cheaper but also make one that is much more compact than a traditional 24-70mm f2.8 all while keeping the fixed maximum aperture of f2.8. The lens measures just 2.8 x 4″ / 72.2 x 101.5 mm, and uses a 67mm filter. It truly is considerably more compact than the Sigma 24-70mm, and I know this because I had both lenses with me at the time to review. It will also work with APS-C sensor cameras with an effective increase in focal length to 42-105mm due to the crop factor. I loved the haptics and rendering of that camera. The Leica m 28/5.6 was gorgeous in rendering on it and perfect for street photos. I also loved the stunning and tiny Voigtlander 50/3.5 on it. This was taken around the Civic Center with the S1. The focal length used was 31mm with the settings being f7.1 and 100 ISO.This is the lightest fixed aperture lens in the Sony Eco system, it even noticeable lighter than f4 lenses RF and Z mounts are still very young. Sony E mount didn't have have many third party support during its early days either. Here’s a photo of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge taken with the S1. The focal length was 43mm with the settings being f8 and 100 ISO.
