About this deal

Born in Westport, Connecticut, in 1949, Leibovitz received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1971. She subsequently continued her studies with photographer Ralph Gibson. In 1969 she lived on a kibbutz in Israel and participated in an archaeological dig at King Solomon's temple. From 1970 to 1983, she was a freelance photographer and the chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, and in 1975 she served as a concert-tour photographer for The Rolling Stones band. She has been a contributing photographer for Vanity Fair magazine since 1983, and in the early 1990s, she founded the Annie Leibovitz Studio in New York City. a b Guthmann, Edward (November 1, 2006). That same year, Leibovitz joined the newly re-launched Vanity Fair as a staff photographer. In 1998 she also began working regularly for Vogue. In high school, she became interested in various artistic endeavours, and began to write and play music. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute. She became interested in photography after taking pictures when she lived in the Philippines, where her Air Force father was stationed during the Vietnam War. That year, she submitted her portfolio, which included a portrait of poet Allen Ginsberg to the art director of the newly launched Rolling Stone magazine, Robert Ingsbury, and scored her first success. I’ve never asked anyone to do something which doesn’t seem right to them. And I don’t ask them to do something for no reason. There’s always some thought behind my pictures. I throw out several ideas and see what they want to do. When I photographed the performance artisy Rachel Rosenthal, for instance, I gave her three or four ideas. The last one was about being buried in the sand in the desert. That’s the one she got excited about. I always ask a subject if they have ideas.With a wider choice of subjects, Leibovitz’s photographs for the magazine ranged from presidents to movie stars to literary icons and world-class athletes. There is a sensitivity to Leibovitz’s art, most likely developed from the trust she builds with her subjects.
