About this deal

Looking across multiple categories, from premium to ultra premium, blanco to mixto, with entrants from producers of all scales, the competition saw a number of Tequila and mezcal brands awarded medals for their superior quality. Over the last 26 weeks in California, Best Day Brewing remains the fastest growing top-10 brand in the Non-Alcoholic Craft Beer segment, according to Nielsen data. Tequila is made exclusively from the blue agave plant, grown primarily in the area surrounding the city of — you guessed it — Tequila, in the western state of Jalisco, Mexico.

New beverage launches: from tequila to coffee

Born in the highlands of the Jalisco mountains, Cazcabel is crafted by the Vazquez family, who possess four generations of expertise in agave farming and tequila production. The tequila is made using seven-year-old, 100% Blue Weber agave, with each bottle emblazoned with a depiction of the Jalisco mountains. With the upcoming completion of Cazcabel’s brand home and distillery in Atotonilco El Alto, the expanded production capacity makes it the ‘ideal moment’ for the brand to enter the US market. This category is aged for at least a year, but less than three, and is where you’ll really start to notice the influence of the barrel. Producers use everything from ex-bourbon to red wine or Scotch whisky casks to add subtle layers of caramel, toffee and oak on top of the fresh and peppery agave base.Cazcabel Blanco, a spirit fashioned from the sun-baked agave and made in the heart of the Jalisco region beautifully balances the agave’s earthy notes with a fresh, citrus edge. With the fresh, earthy and dry Blanco at its heart, Cazcabel Honey adds a dose of sweet nectar to the blend. It is the world’s first honey tequila, made from 100% natural honey, giving a true, natural taste. Cazcabel Coffee blends a roasted, sweet hit of luxury coffee to the spirit with chocolate and vanilla notes. Cazcabel Reposado, rested in American oak barrels for 8 months and balances the beautiful, clean and earthy agave flavour of the double distilled Blanco with the complex but subtle aromas of toasted Oak. Finally, we have the newly added Cazcabel Coconut, a blend of succulent sweet Coconuts with the dry, earthy tones and crisp citrus edge of Cazcabel Blanco. The Spirits Business held its annual Tequila and Mezcal Masters last month, where an experienced panel of judges uncovered some of the category’s best expressions available on the global market. Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and tequila-loving consumers – put 27 blanco, reposado and anejo tequilas to the test. Tequila blanco (or silver as it’s sometimes called) is clear in colour and unaged. As such you can expect a fresh, agave, citrus-spiked flavour. Reposado Reposado (literally meaning ‘rested’) is the next level up and aged for a minimum of two months in oak, up to one year. This extra step means the liquid develops a light golden hue and generally a smoother, more mellow profile. Here you can expect sweeter notes, such as coconut and vanilla. As our most recent blind tasting competition revealed, it can be all too easy for producers to lose the essence of the agave flavour by over-ageing or over-sweetening the spirit as they strive to create something different. Despite this challenge, many expressions shone through, offering excellent value in their respective flights. Like champagne, tequila production is a closely guarded secret and must be made and bottled within a specific area in Mexico. It can only be made from blue agave (unlike smoky mezcal which can be created from over 30 different varieties). Each was tried neat and blind, to avoid brand bias, allowing the full flavours — fresh citrus to warming oak — to shine through. They were on the lookout for smooth, easy-drinking styles, with well-balanced sweetness and added complexity.
