When the mood strikes, send out all those messages and don’t feel you have to apologise for being quiet.

The Right Words: when you need them most : Ashworth, Donna

She wants you to remember what it feels like to run to the sea without a care in the world and splash and laugh till you ache. Short funeral verse written by Joyce Grenfell with a message about finding ways to cope with grief carry on after losing a loved one. A short funeral poem by Helen Lowrie Marshall about happy memories living on after a loved one has gone.Yes, the italics are in the original. I think these are the kinds of “poems” that every grandma hopes their granddaughters are writing when she tells her family: “I am a poet!” There is nothing at stake here, nor does it present anything particularly unique or personal. The voice is indistinct. This poem skips original comparisons in favor of worn-out “glimmers of light” and “open arms” and “circles of friends,” which basically violate the first rule of poetry (Fight Club): never use cliches. This is a state of being like no other we have ever known because we are all going through it together but so very far apart. It’s as if she’s got a hotline to your head. She gets inside your mind, rummages round all those piles of messy-feely thoughts, even the ones in the darkest corners, then heads for your heart. Your instinct for knowing what (and who) is worth your time, will grow and flourish like ivy on a castle wall.

Love is an energy, so powerful, so all-consuming that when the person you felt all that love for is not here, you are a vessel filled with a boundless source of power that has nowhere to go.

See a Problem?

Donna has an incredible talent for capturing moments and moods through her words. Thoughtful, uplifting and inspiring.” THE LOSS OF A MOTHER is a really good one and I took a deep breath expecting to really tear up as my own mum died quite recently but it was THE LOSS OF A FATHER that made me the most emotional, the one that had me nodding in agreement with its words and sentiment, especially with the part where your father has already planted the answers you seek etc Donna's beautiful words have a way of climbing inside your very soul, her writing is wise, comforting and she has a wonderful way of making this sometimes lonely journey through midlife much less bewildering!" If you are organising a funeral service some of these are ideal to be read at those. As I said earlier in my review my mum recently died and we chose a poem my daughter remembered from school called Funeral Blues by W.H. Auden. There were many in this book that I could and would have had. A short religious funeral poem, ideal for a eulogy or memorial poem. A poem about loved ones finding peace with God in Heaven.
