I figured out that the creators of the kids’ entertainment didn’t realise there was a gender disparity, they all said, ‘Oh, no, no, that’s not true any more’. And they would name a movie with one female character as proof that there was gender equality. So I decided, if I get the data, I can go to them directly... I could just go privately and politely to them and share the data. I bet on the fact that the data would make them want to do better. When watching children’s programming, she noticed that boy characters were much more plentiful and got more action-oriented roles. She started an organization to study gender roles in media, which worked with the film and TV industry to correct the inequities and help inspire girls to have greater aspirations.

It didn’t really have a big impact on me because I was getting work. The parts where people thought that I wasn’t pretty enough were the kinds of roles that I wouldn’t have wanted to play in hindsight because they were the girlfriend of the person who’s doing all the fun stuff, and your job was to be really pretty. So I managed to avoid those parts almost exclusively.
