The manga's stories typically involve the cheerful, hyperactive, and gluttonous prankster Kirby getting into a scuffle with the eccentric King Dedede, who is usually friendly and easygoing until he becomes annoyed by Kirby's behavior and taunts. Despite their many conflicts, the two still regard each other as friends at heart, and they sometimes work together. Often, Kirby will also spend a chapter trying to achieve a goal in an absurd manner, letting himself get carried away with passing whims and fancies, or he will act out scenarios drawn from classic literature, television, history, and current trends.
