About this deal

Few things depict imagery and paint pictures quite as well as stories do. What books out there can help our special needs children? It is vital that we find reading and academic material tailor-made to our special needs children. These books should offer a peek into their thought processes and, perhaps most importantly help their friends to understand them better. The book also gives a personal insight into some of the experiences which shaped Leah from a young age. These include her upbringing in a Christian family, how her world was shattered when her parents announced they were separating when she was 14 and how she coped with her sister dying in a car accident when Leah was just 16.

I’ve always loved using books as a way to help teach students. And when autism awareness day/week/month starts getting closer, I get a lot more messages. These are usually from teachers and assistants. And one of my biggest suggestions, is always to use children’s books.

Leah’s Voice, by Lori DeMonia | Book Spotlight

Understanding Samantha tells the story of a brother, David, who is doing his best to understand his sister’s differences. Even with all the struggles it implicates, he decides to help and guide her through an extremely hard process of adaptation, while at the same time illustrating how she perceives the world. Raising Awareness Because it’s the 60 Anniversary of the campaign, we are challenging 60 parent carers and professionals to sign up for the training during the campaign week. We have an exciting series of events for children and their families, and professionals at four local libraries. We have also secured a number of places for the National Autistic Societies Autism in Girls Training. I hope they would have a better understanding about what some of the characteristics of autism “look” like. For example, a child covering their ears in the grocery store or repeating a phrase to themselves. I hope with more understanding, and not just awareness about autism, that there will in turn be more acceptance and also more support towards families that need it. I also hope children who have a peer on the spectrum will accept and include them. Some behaviors can be confusing to children, but I hope with a story that will hopefully resonate with them, they will understand and show acceptance. The book also documents Leah's whirlwind, shot-to-stardom experiences after The Voice ended. She recounts recording and touring in America with Will.i.am, performing on stage in stadiums across the world, meeting her music icons and rubbing shoulders with them at parties, and she even shares what it was like to perform at the Grammys and be congratulated on her performance by Tom Hanks ("I only watched Tom Hanks movies for about two years after that," she joked).

Another great mention is Naoki’s latest book, Fall Down 7 Times Get Up 8: A Young Man’s Voice from the Silence of Autism The Categorical Universe of Candice Phee, by Barry Jonsberg I'd definitely like to do both," she says. And there's one person she would definitely love a chance to perform alongside. Read More Related Articles I had written my first children’s book years before I had children, and was about to have it published. The night before the contract was due, the owner of Halo Publishing called me at home. She encouraged me to write a book about autism because she could tell I wanted to create awareness and help others have a better understanding. When I explained that a story about autism was just an idea, and maybe would be the next book I wrote, she insisted that I do that book first. I hung up and felt like I had just gotten homework, but the next day started to write. Those are my top 10 best children’s books about autism.
