Today I was thinking about the major arcana and their connections to the social links/confidants in the Persona series, specifically Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. And because I have way too much free time on my hands and am a nerd, I decided to write this little analysis of the P5 confidants and why they fit their respective arcana. Maybe I'll write one for the P4 social links as well on the P4 subreddit after I finish playing Persona 4 lol. Regardless, without further ado, here is my reasons why the P5 confidants fall within their given major arcana! Feel free to chime in with your own thoughts and comment whether you agree or disagree with my analysis! P.S. I am no tarot expert, so all this information is based off what I read on the internet and Shin Megami Tensei wiki. Tarot cards were used as obtainable items required for Persona summoning in Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, and were used as plot devices in Persona 3 and Persona 4. In the last two, only the Major Arcana of the Tarot were used, although the Minor Arcana were used in Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden for Shuffle Time and as Incense (stat-boosting items) in Persona 3. Completing the Faith Arcana Confidant at Rank 10 will also bestow the ultimate form of the Arcana, Maria.While the Tarot meaning of the Strength Arcana involves several aspects of courage, in Persona games, the focal point is the courage to handle physical and mental challenges. Hence, the characters correlated to this Arcana need the MC’s support in undertaking a strenuous issue. The Hermit: Upright it symbolizes soul-searching, introspection, being alone, and inner guidance. Reversed the Hermit symbolizes isolation, loneliness, and withdrawal. This all fits Futaba pretty well. She does do some soul-searching and eventually comes to realize that she must trust in herself and her memories to reach the truth about her past (namely that she was not to blame for her mother's death). At first she is also very lonely and, well, isolated so yeah the Hermit arcana makes perfect sense for her.

The Fool Arcana Social Link is represented by SEES, unlike other Arcana, Fool Arcana is unique by itself, as it automatically powers up as the story progresses. Later in the game, should the protagonist choose not to kill Ryoji Mochizuki, the Fool Arcana will max out itself, bestowing the ultimate Persona of the Fool Arcana, Susano-o, the raging god. What is Arcana?

For example, the Social Link or Confidant for the Magician Arcana tends to belong to the closest male friend or the ‘BFF’ of the Protagonist. This has been the case since Persona 3’s Kenji Tomochika, Persona 4’s Yosuke Hanamura, and Persona 5’s Morgana. According to its Tarot description, the Emperor Arcana indicates control over one’s life and creating their own rules. This is quite a match for Shadow Kanji and Yusuke’s circumstances, as both follow their own version of manhood and normalcy that goes against the norm. Creativity and illusion are the two sides to the Moon Arcana. But the Persona games choose to concentrate on displaying the latter in the Social Links and Confidant of the Moon Arcana. That’s why Nozomi, Shinjiro, Ai, and Yuuki put on a harsh and hostile facade that the Protagonists eventually unveiled. Cause for me, the Persona games stood out from others because of how relatable it was despite being full of supernatural elements. And if I were you, I’d want to get the full version of the game rather than a watered-down version. Defined by hope, kindness, and other positive qualities, the Star Arcana is appropriately conveyed in human form by the characters linked to the Arcana. From what I’ve seen, Teddie and Akihiko are pillars of support to the Protagonists, and they serve as one of the main guiding lights in Persona 3 and 4.
