About this deal

Plustek presented the OpticFilm 120 Pro at Photokina this year. It offers a scanning resolution of 5300 dpi with a color depth of 48 bits. Its scan area is 60 mm × 120 mm. The unit comes with seven original 35 mm framed slides, 35 mm film strips and medium format film from 6 × 4.5 to 6 × 12. The film holders are each encoded in the Pro version so that the scanning software automatically detects and positions the slides. Manual film & slide scanning- With users inserting slide holder and film holder manually, PrimeFilm XEs is capable of scanging 135 negative film & positive slides. The film holder & slide holder are composed of sturdy plastic, and there are pressure strips in the middle of each negative to ensure the flatness of the negative.

I’ve recently changed to a Reflecta ProScan 10T ( Pacific Image PrimeFilm XE ) because of the 4000ppi resolution on the USAF 1951 target, at 5000ppi resolution in MTF tests - https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/64942982 Pacific Image advertises the PF10K scanner as a 10,000 dpi scanner so a lens rated at 3100 ppi optical resolution doesn’t seem to compare but Nikon is one of the only manufacturers that actually use accurate optical resolution figures so the test results might be a surprise. The problem with all current dedicated film scanners other than the very expensive Hassleblad Imacon, is that they have no focus/auto-focus facility. The film to imaging device is pre-set at manufacture. If this is made very accurately, you are OK but if as on my Plustek Opticfilm 7400, it is slightly wrong, no matter what you do, the end results are going to be soft. I also loathe Silverfast and Vuescan feels very elderly. My old Artixscan had autofocus and although only 4000 pixels/inch produced very sharp results until sadly a faulty Firewire 800 to SCSI interface killed it. Superior image quality- With 3.9dynamic range and a resolution of 10,000 dpi, PrimeFilm XEs Film Scanner provides high quality scanning capability of 135 filmand slides

I save the non-inverted flat scans as 5,000DPI TIFF files in the /positives folder. Because there’s a wide variety of inverting the negatives — be it by hand via Photoshop or through something like NegativeLab — I can now choose the best one or re-do without having to rescan an image. The PrimeFilm XE comes with user-friendly scanning software that provides essential controls for adjusting scan settings and image enhancements. The software facilitates a seamless scanning process, allowing users to preview and select specific frames for scanning. Additionally, the software supports batch scanning, enabling the efficient digitization of multiple film strips or slides at once. Compatibility and Connectivity The Toshiba TCD2707D uses 7450 elements with a 7 μm pitch. The TCD2707D has a maximum resolution of 5404 ppi (without any optical scaling). In the PrimeFilm XE scanner the TCD2707D sensor active area is 35mm wide and is being used to scan a 24mm wide area so the optical resolution is a maximum of 7881 ppi. This figure is a maximum, in the real world optical resolution is the combined resolution of lens resolving power, film transport and sensor sampling rate. 7881 sounds great but then again Pacific Image claims that this is a 10,000 ppi scanner. Toshiba data tells a different story. Viewing window - With the viewing window on the top of the scanner, users can seethe whole scanning process.

Organizing your folder structure is also important, while file names aren’t. I found that a pattern with the best balance between searchability and effort is: Setup. Flatbeds are cumbersome; DSLR rigs are painful. Dedicated scanners like XA are reasonably easy to move around and require nothing other than a power source and a laptop nearby. Sample scan file. I have had this model for over a year now, I have recently got really cheesed off about the spurious marks on my scans and decided to have a look to see whether I could do anything about it. I sent an enquiry through to their support group and by return I received some instruction to remove their software, including some system files (Framework files). then follow a supplied URL and re-install the software. Speaking of distribution: Mono is easier (even cheaper) to get where I live than Fomapan Classic 100, which is the same film, according to Stephen .As the owner of a Nikon LS-4000 (35 mm) and LS-8000 (MF), I'm in a good position to know the relative merits of scanning and copying. Suffice to say, I rarely use the scanners, because they're too slow to ever finish doing the slides and film I shot over the years but never scanned. From an altruistic point of view, I'd rather investigate using a camera, and pass along what I've learned to others, who may not have the means nor inclination to buy obsolete and generally non-reparable equipment. Once you got your archival method ready, you will need to make some space for your scanner. PrimeFilm accepts film on one side and pushes it to the other, which means that there needs to be additional space around your machine.

CineStill 800T with Minolta TC-1, scanned with PrimeFilm XA (digital negative). Setting up workspace for scanning and archiving 35mm film with PrimeFilm XAs. The magazine in this scanner can accommodate up to 50 slides at a time, letting you start the slide processing process while moving on to other tasks. The USB connectivity works well with both Windows and Mac computers, too.I have to say, that my Nikon Super CoolScan 4000 ED was far better, it even produced a standard raw file that I could manipulate with my favourite raw processor, Iridient Digital, after the owner of that software responded to my request to add the filetype to his supported list. The problem with that was that the driver software only worked with MacOS Risc up to Leopard (don’t know about windows), and eventually the power supply petered out and that was the end of that… boo hoo! Here around by now I see LS-50ED selling more than twice the price of a new Proscan 10T, and couple LS-40ED USB1.1 (not the "Super" with faster FireWire) at the price of a new Proscan 10T. Scan resolution. PrimeFilm XA maxes out at 10,000DPI “ ultra-resolution ” , which can yield 137- megapixel scans, or images measuring about 14,370 by 9,566 pixels. The optical resolution of this scanner is quoted at 5000 ✕ 10,000DPI by Taiwantrade.com . This means that in “ultra-resolution” mode, PrimeFilm XAs will create an interpolated scan that will have a high 10K DPI resolution in one of its dimensions — this way you are still getting about 50% more information out of your image than with a 5K DPI.
