Another study out of Australia (Ryan et al 2013) found an increased incidence of injury in runners using partial minimalist footwear. They randomly assigned 103 runners with neutral or mild pronation one of three shoes: the Nike Pegasus 28, Nike Free 3.0 V2, or the Vibram 5-Finger Bikila. The runners completed a 12 week training program for a 10k race. At the end of the 12 weeks, 99 runners remained in the study. 23 runners sustained an injury, with the Nike Free group having the most injuries (12) and the Pegasus the least (4).

The Ride has a more traditional feel and a great fit. Moderately firm and responsive, it’s the middle ground between Triumph and Kinvara. However, the changes are more than skin-deep. The redesigned midsole has a softer and smoother ride due to the articulated outsole design that exposes more midsole foam than the 19. The outsole of the Ride has plenty of rubber. There is durable carbon rubber in the heel and softer blown rubber in the mid and forefoot. The outsole of the Kinvara is mostly Pwrrun midsole with strategically placed rubber only on the outer heel and toe ares. The Ride has a much more durable but firmer outsole than the Kinvara which should last many more kilometres. Both shoes grip the road very well but on wet surfaces the Ride has better traction due to the additional rubber on its outsole. There are more subtle differences, including what seems to be a slightly more voluminous interior, creating a more accommodating fit for more foot shapes. It also feels softer and slightly more flexible than the Kinvara 12. Cadillac of easy run shoes,” it is a series of premium, highly-cushioned trainers, perfect for building up the mileage.

This happens to a mid-cycle refresh, so that means that the 2022 Kinvara is based on the same midsole architecture as the Kinvara 12. It is a premium lineup that includes three models for different purposes, from easy runs to setting personal bests. Equipped with the latest technologies from Saucony, these are meant to minimize energy loss and maximize your running performance. Andrea: The Saucony Kinvara line has been one of my favorites for years. The 4mm drop, lightweight cushioning, and flexible midsole makes it one of the most natural feeling shoes on the market. In recent years, the Kinvara had lost some flexibility and the shoe didn’t feel as natural as early versions. The Kinvara 12 moved closer to the original Kinvara in flexibility and performance and was definitely a step in the right direction. The 13 is the lightest Kinvara ever thanks to a redesigned upper that took over 1 oz. off the weight of the 12.

Saucony Kinvara 13 Conclusion

The Kinvara 12 was more of a miss because of its rather rigid ride. But with the Kinvara 13 turned out to be more forgiving and bouncier in our run tests! The upper in general doesn’t fit quite as snugly as in years past, but the toe box is the roomiest of any Kinvara to date. Davis, I. (2014). The Re-emergence of the Minimalist Running Shoe. The Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy (44, no. 10). 775-787 . Once I finally had the correct size, I took the Kinvara 12 out for an easy run to get a feel for the ride.

We first began reviewing the Saucony Ride in 2014, so we can say with certain authority that the Ride 15 is the most changed version to date. Our comprehensive review covers all the updates on the new model. Except for the tiny pieces of rubber under the high-wear zones, the outsole is an extension of the foam midsole. It’s the same as last year, so there are large chevron-shaped lugs under the forefoot for traction.

On days when the running pace exceeds 4:30 min/km or 7 min/mile, the low-profile ride proves to be a willing companion. The 7.2-ounce weight also contributes to the non-distracting ride character. The upper has been given a facelift which is my favorite part of the shoe and the midsole offers the same basic PWRRUN as the Kinvara 12. There is no difference in the midsole between the two versions. Given the slightly wider fit of the upper, I had to pull the laces tighter than usual, so the added length really made them flop around on top of my foot when running fast. Some of the road running shoes are also released in trail versions (see shoes with “TR” in the name). They are meant to bring the familiar experience of your favorite road shoes to the trail, but with added grip and protection. Let’s talk tech: Special features in Saucony shoes The Kinvara 13 is almost the same as the first Kinvara. Meaning, that racing shoes now have plates that make them swift. And most daily trainers are very comfortable and responsive for that longer distance run you might want to use them for. In the Kinvara 13s that is not the case. Both the Endorphin racers have been updated, and even everyday trainers like the Ride 15 and Guide 15 have been completely redone from the ground up. The Saucony Tempus is a brand new – and interesting – take on the stability running shoe concept. For high-mileage runs, we suggest a suitably-cushioned shoe. Later in this review, our rotational recommendation offers alternatives. This is a running shoe with a very firm ride – there are no ifs or buts. That has been the Kinvara’s calling card in its early days– even though there were a few years when the K-shoe turned soft.
