About this deal

The naming can be confusing because sometimes polymeric sand can be called jointing sand. But for builders, jointing sand is regular sand – no cement added.

slabs on sand? Can I lay my Indian sandstone paving slabs on sand?

With the sand in place, it's time to lay the paving slabs. Begin at one edge of the patio, and work your way across the surface, placing each slab in the desired location. Use a rubber mallet to tap the slabs into place and ensure they are level with one another. Yes. You should always fill expansion joints. Expansion joints account for cement’s natural properties of expansion in the heat and contraction in the cold. Be sure to choose a flexible sealant. Finally, while the sand layer does help to improve drainage, it is not as effective as a full mortar bed at preventing water from seeping beneath the slabs. This can cause the sand to wash away over time, leading to further instability and potential damage to the slabs.

As a side note - make sure when you’re measuring out your perimeter that you take into account the small gap that you need to keep between your paving slabs (about 10-15mm) when you come to lay them. We’ll explain why a bit further down.

Today, some people may still choose to lay paving slabs on sand for similar reasons. For example, if you are on a tight budget, creating a patio on sand can be a more affordable option than a full mortar bed installation. Additionally, if you have sandy soil on your property, using sand as a base for your patio can help to create a stable and level surface. Once the sand has been compacted, use a spirit level to ensure that the surface is level and even, although remember to ensure there is a slight slope away from your home to allow rainwater to run away. If you notice any high or low spots, use a shovel to adjust the sand accordingly. Step 3: Lay the Slabs The jointing compound wants a 3mm gap (no problem if much larger like 10mm) and in their example they want to highlight an inch depth, despite being a new install, they will still want you to go an inch down on your old patio – this is pretty much the standard and whilst it never guarantees you hold weeds and insects at bay, you give yourself the best possible chance! When a joint is saturated, then water will stop seeping down and begin a small pool on top. That’s when you stop. What Happens if Polymeric Sand Gets Rained On?

Once you have excavated the area, add a layer of MOT Type 1 to the bottom of the hole. This will help to improve drainage and prevent the sand from washing away over time. Lay in two courses of 50mm each and compact down between layers. Step 2: Add the Sand Before even thinking of laying paving slabs, you need to prepare your patio area. If you’re upgrading paving slabs that are already in place, dig these up before beginning. Dig a depth of around 150mm across the whole area, making sure the soil is evenly compacted. Then tip in the sub-base, raking it into a consistent depth of 100mm. Make sure it’s smooth, flat and firm.Get a hosepipe and wet down your slab or stone. Don’t flood it to the point you pull the sand but do ensure everything is wet. It won’t be a problem if you don’t shoot directly in the channels. This will give the right environment for the Sika to bond well. Brush in patio grout now I’ve just spend a week cleaning drive, removing few oil spots, scrapping out every trace of plant growth, sanding, then I’ve sealed with 70lt of Everbuild Patio Sealer
