About this deal

H was really excited to get to ask Lou Kuenzler some questions too – and Lou herself tells us more about Bella Broomstick. This hilarious and touching adventure features magical bunnies, dancing socks, and plenty of fun characters! But when nasty Piers Seymour is mean to her new friend Esme, she is tempted to use her magical powers to teach Piers a lesson. My new funny series Bella Broomstick is about a young witch who is so bad at magic, she is expelled from the Magic Realm and sent off in disgrace to the Person World to be fostered by human beings instead. What I like the most about Lou’s books are the way they’re laid out – they were great at encouraging H to read expression aloud which I think is really important when a child learns to read – especially in longer books.

Bella Broomstick | Summer Reading Challenge Bella Broomstick | Summer Reading Challenge

She discovered Shrinking Violet Really Loves Ancient Egypt on a trip to the British Museum, and now has the whole set. Certainly, the minute Bella swept into my imagination, her show-off kitten, naughty Rascal, was clinging upside down to the broomstick right behind her. It is the emotional growth of the character, not nifty wand work, which always triumphs and brings satisfaction in the end … But how brilliant to have a bubbling cauldron of magical fun with potions, spells and flying broomsticks along the way.I would recommend this book to people who like witchy books because this book will really suit them. It is always very exciting – and slightly strange – to know these are the same words I wrote but not be able to understand them. This book is about a witch who has an aunt that won’t let her sleep she keeps waking her up in the night and telling her that she is a bad witch and will never be any good at doing spells. Close your eyes now and I bet you can instantly picture Walt Disney’s terrifying wicked witch holding out the shiny red apple to Snow White. Her nasty Aunt Hemlock sends her to live in Person World, and she isn’t allowed to do any magic ever again.

BELLA BROOMSTICK SERIES – Lou Kuenzler

In fact, she’s on her fourth or fifth read of the book now – it’s safe to say it’s another favourite. I thought this was a good book and I like the characters and my favourite one was the skeleton witch teacher. As children begin to read for themselves the rich tradition of witches continues with The Worst Witch series and Harry Potter, of course, to name just two. It's her first day at Merrymeet Primary School, which is bound to be better than Creepy Castle School for Wizards and Witches, where Bella almost blew up the dungeon. H is a big fan of her books, so when we were given the chance to review and feature Lou on Mum Friendly, she was super excited! As a parent, I’ve found Lou Kuenzler’s books to have the right amount of humour for a child H’s age to understand – and I like how her characters get up to fun adventures – and most importantly, talk in a way she can relate – and they make her laugh.
