Though I don't move in the kind of social circles described in the book, it sounds pretty authentic to me. He’d always been told that he was the rightful heir and yet suddenly his mother stopped talking to him, completely turned her back on him, and refused to ever see him again. In the more modern sections, Part V and beyond, it takes another 50 page jump into another completely different dynasty- the Kennedy's and Kick in particular.
