It is bad enough that the chapter on the doomed affair between Kennedy and the eighth Earl Fitzwilliam Wentworth is heralded by the single sentence, "The affair seemed madness from the start.The book brilliantly sets out the social differences of the time, the age old fight between capitalism and socialism. Its always satisfying to have your lived experience reflected in a work of fiction, speaking as someone who lives and grew up in Soweto. Though I don't move in the kind of social circles described in the book, it sounds pretty authentic to me. He’d always been told that he was the rightful heir and yet suddenly his mother stopped talking to him, completely turned her back on him, and refused to ever see him again. In the more modern sections, Part V and beyond, it takes another 50 page jump into another completely different dynasty- the Kennedy's and Kick in particular.
