About this deal

I haven't read anything that has made me cry, laugh, yearn and feel so brimming with potential for a long, long time. Kitty’s Instagram account is therefore a treat: full of baking goods, good humour and a lovely smile! And that was really painful, but also really good because, at the end of it, I understood, not why I got ill or why I struggled, but I became immensely proud of myself. Their playful inventiveness spills onto Instagram, where Kitty uses miniature figures with her bakes to create whimsical photos and animations, reminding us that bread is alive by giving her pastries googly eyes.

Much of the book is about baking and a career change but family life is described - the importance of Christmas, family dogs, meeting other families such as a wonderful family living in Copenhagen. Biography: Kitty Tait and her Dad Al live in Watlington, Oxfordshire and between them run the Orange Bakery. Writing about it made me realise my mental health wasn’t my fault and it never really was’: Kitty Tait and her father, Al, at the Orange Bakery in Watlington, Oxfordshire. The hardcopy of this book is going on my bookshelf in the near future, to become dusted in flour and encrusted with dough. The next day, peaking under the tea towel as the mix gently bubbled and popped, Kitty came to a stunning realization: bread is alive.Using a sharp knife or length of thread, slice the dough crossways into 12 equal slices, each roughly 2cm wide.

The Tait parents are living their lives as best they can and they sound no different from the busy, hectic lifestyle we take as the norm these days. One part inspirational memoir, one part delicious and rustic recipes, combined to make a wholesome and inspirational cookbook that I’m proud to display on my shelves. Go back to what your mother taught you': TV presenter Susannah Constantine on the six money-saving hacks that helped her cut energy use on laundry by a THIRD!

But when their youngest child, Kitty, shows signs of suffering the parents make changes, they make way for a new set of priorities and they take a journey of discovery: of the magic behind the perfect loaf and the magic behind contentment. That said, this is a really uplifting and inspiring read - it was wonderful to see the village rally round the family, and to hear about a young girl discovering and developing her passion. Place the shaped dough on a sheet of parchment paper cover with a damp tea towel and set aside in a warm, cosy place to rest for one hour.

Al says they want to use their expertise and profile to work on projects that align with their values, perhaps working in schools and setting up a microbakery in a nearby prison.

I really loved reading this memoir and was totally obsessed by it (I read it over two days and probably also dreamt about it at night). The story of how the Orange Bakery came to be is so heartwarming and I’m so glad to know that there are communities out there who will support each other so fervently and are always there to boost each other up. I will never look at bread the same and have a much deeper appreciation for the ways in which we can connect to our food because of this book. It was a brave move for her father to give up the job of teaching to become a baker in partnership with his daughter.
