Recorded using state of the art 24-track console on 30 ips tape, the recording sounds marvellous although my copy is a bit scratchy. Features of this compilation include a newly recorded version of "Top of the World", "Ticket to Ride" and a number of musical introductions and segues between the songs "Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Goodbye to Love", the latter two were sped up in pitch, much to the regret of Richard in subsequent years. The music of "Rainy Days and Mondays" was composed by Roger Nichols, and the lyrics were written by Paul Williams, who later recorded his own version of the song. Perhaps mainly as a result of the hit single, "For All We Know" went on to win an Academy Award for "Best Song".

We've Only Just Begun" begins with an excerpt of "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and contains elements of "Superstar. All lead vocals are by Karen, except on the tracks "Druscilla Penny", "Saturday", and the "Walk on By" segment of the Bacharach/David Medley, in which Richard Carpenter sings lead vocal, with Karen in the background. Carpenters' melodic pop, produced a record-breaking run of hits on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, and they became leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary genres.

In Cash Box 's Top 100 Albums of 1971, Carpenters was listed as one of the year's ten biggest albums. The music of "One Love" was composed by Richard Carpenter, and the lyrics written by John Bettis, in the late 1960s, when both had jobs at Disneyland. Individuals and groups with two or three hits all of a sudden put them on an album, use filler for the rest and title it "greatest hits". Rainy Days and Mondays" was the Carpenters' second Nichols/Williams hit, after " We've Only Just Begun" of the Close to You album the previous year.Let us not forget the two hits, Only Yesterday, which showcases Karen's huskiness in her vocals, and Please Mr. Their recording career ended with Karen's death in 1983 from cardiac arrest due to complications of anorexia nervosa.

Later that year, the Carpenters performed it on The Andy Williams Show, with Karen in a lacy outfit with a blue background.Liner notes credit Karen Carpenter on electric bass for two tracks, but do not specify which tracks. In the 1973 TV special Robert Young with the Young, Richard and Karen performed "Saturday" and talked about its meaning. Originally from New Haven, Connecticut, their parents decided to move the family west to Los Angeles, California.

They were briefly known as Spectrum and then Carpenters, where they then recorded for a small label, Magic Lamp Records. The production is top notch, Richard's arrangements are impeccable, especially on Solitaire, Aurora/Eventide and I Can Dream.

Richard Carpenter remixed the song by adding a heavier bassline and refining the vocals, and it was released on 2003's Carpenters Perform Carpenter. Album box set retrospective which includes all of The Carpenters studio albums apart from the two Christmas releases, also includes the 1969 - 1973 Compilation album.
