About this deal

Left to myself, I would put it alongside Black Beauty or Lassie Come Home, tales of animals who endure extended abuse, hardship and/or neglect before being reunited with owners who love them. My recollection was that it brought me to tears, and as I have two quite sensitive little boys, I was hesitant to introduce this one to them. With every person who touches him, Edward’s heart grows a little bit softer and a little bit bigger.

Alternatively, wait until close to the end of the story and create a whole cast of Edwards showing his changing physical state as he journeys on. I picked up The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane after a high recommendation from a friend on Goodreads. I'm not sure how kids would react to this, I think from a child's perspective they would only see a story that kind of follows a kind of familiar pattern they are already familiar with. As she did in her Newbery Medal Book, The Tale of Despereaux (2004), DiCamillo tucks important messages into this story and once more plumbs the mystery of the heart—or, in this case, the heartless. Her word choice and sentence fluency found its way into my writing lesson plans to illustrate some of the possibilities waiting to be found in words. For example, you might display the word ‘jaunty’ and then reveal the sentence: ‘The prince left the castle with a jaunty walk, having rescued the princess’. Now meet Edward, an older and wiser rabbit, who has survived many indignities, but now understands what it is to love and be loved.

As Edward lives with new people and hears their often tragic stories, he begins to not only understand love, but he begins to feel it as well. And fall he does, into the sea, after mean boys rip him from Abilene’s hands during an ocean voyage. Bagram Ibatoulline graduated from the State Academic Institute of Arts in Moscow and has illustrated numerous picture books, including The Nightingale and Hana in the Time of Tulips. I chose this book because when my 4th-grade teacher read it to my class for the first time, I was amazed.A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides that feature detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, quotes, and essay topics. Edward again finds happiness in a simple life as he and his new companions travel and hide on train cars until they are caught and Edward is carelessly toss off of the train by a railroad conductor. The bunny of the title is the special toy of a girl who treats him like a prince, which makes him smug.
