About this deal

And for a camera you're supposed to have with you, to whip out at crucial moments and grab an image, this is disappointing to say the least. The gesture touch controls are a nice addition, although it’s very particular and one must do it just right for it to work well, which for me took some practice. I wouldn’t use it for shooting sport or action, but it’s fast enough to cope with street photography situations.

As usual, the XF10 has Fuji’s Film Simulation modes: Provia, Velvia/Vivid, Astia, Classic Chrome Pro Neg Hi, Pro Neg. Both offer much faster, focus-free “hyperfocal” shooting – one set to a focus distance of 2 metres and an aperture of f/8, the other set to 5 metres and f/5. A dial around the shutter button, and a second dial at the right end of the top-plate allow quick exposure setting adjustments. And certainly, the Fujifilm will take photos with better detail and more natural-looking blurred backgrounds than older smartphones, but newer models like the Pixel 3 are closing the quality gap quickly. Use fast enough shutter to compensate for the lack of IBIS: high iso is way better than -for example- the GRII’s.

The XF10 uses a regular CMOS sensor rather than the more advanced X-Trans design used in Fujifilm’s higher-end cameras, but it doesn’t seem to have much impact on the image quality, which is good. We've been shooting Google's two newest smartphones on two continents: from the parks of Madrid to the mountains of Washington state and the streets of Seattle. This is especially useful on wide-angle lenses - like that on the XF10 - where your depth of field (how much of your scene is in focus) is pretty deep to begin with. The AF system itself is pretty sophisticated, with a choice of single point, zone and wide modes covering pretty much the whole image area. I would move fully to Capture One but unfortunately they don’t offer Fuji’s in-camera film simulations. There are some potentially useful 4K burst modes available, and there is of course 1080/60p capture as well. While Ricoh's GR series of cameras allows for far greater customization (you can select your own distance, for starters), we're glad to see at least some form of snap focus on the XF10, and the options seem sensibly chosen.
