About this deal

Using both materials alongside each other can create an interesting contrast between matte and reflective areas. Because it is less dusty it is ideal for artists who are sensitive to the dust that regular charcoal generates.

Wallace Seymour Original Liquid Charcoal (60ml tube) and Nitram Liquid Charcoal (50ml tube) are both excellent. No amount of cleaning seems to have improved things, and every start and stop is accompanied with the uncertainty of whether it'll stall and need a poke.Beginners may find it useful to weigh up the pros and cons of using both drawing materials, before settling on one to start with. Because graphite is a softer media that tends to smudge, fixatives are recommended for sealing and protecting final artwork.

Brands of ‘woodless pencil’ are also made using a similar procedure but with a heavy resin coating around the outside that needs to be sharpened away like you would with a standard pencils.

They have more of a crayon feel and effect than our other picks, but even the softest, 12B, can achieve a black with noticeable depth.

A really nice little 'taster set' with a Jumbo 9000 Graphite 2B, a graphite 9000 2B, a 9000 Graphite Aquarelle 2B, a Pitt Graphite Pure Stick 6B, a solid graphite crayon 6B, a dust free art eraser and a twin hole sharpener. This unique product is in fact a selection of rocks, minerals, chalks and clays obtained from sources worldwide. You'd still need to power your frog (and connected track) to ensure the polarity is always right, and that might require a bit of work as insulfrog points are connected up assuming the frog will be dead. Manufacturers alter the hardness of charcoal by varying the amount of binder in the mix – similarly to graphite pencils. They feel really good in the hand and allow plenty of freedom when drawing, especially large-scale drawing, as you don’t have to keep stopping to sharpen them.Because it is less precise it encourages spontaneity, which makes it easier to build up drawings quickly. This synthetic graphite tends to be less reflective than mineral ‘flake’ graphite, additionally synthetic graphite’s grey hue can be altered by changing the size of the particles that make it up. Great for capturing quick composition ideas, or for use in Life Drawing classes when you need to be able to record things quickly. Changing the types of brushes you use to apply the charcoal will affect how light or dark your application is.
