About this deal

Although you’re the best goalkeeper the school’s had in years, it’s still more important to win that scholarship. That is where the novel takes an unusual twist, each chapter alternating thereafter between two stories: the newly named Sasha arriving in England and Alex in America.

I realize this novel will appeal to Jeffrey Archer's fans and will certainly recommend it to patrons and friends looking for a skillfully written saga. Because in The Clifton Chronicles, Harry Clifton was an author, and his hero in his detective novels was William Warwick. In one version of the story, Sasha and his mother journey to London, where he grows up to attend Cambridge, stands for Labour MP, marries well, and becomes involved in political hugger-mugger. The chapters alternate and depict Alexander’s life story resulting from both outcomes of the coin toss.Doesn't dampen my enjoyment of the rest of the story but it did cause me to knock off that one star.

Alexander’s father works at the docks in Leningrad and is assassinated by the KGB for starting a trade union amongst the dockworkers. What I did when he tossed the coin and they had the choice of whether to get into the crate going to America or the crate going to England… that was a big decision. I'm closing in on my final months in school and the last thing I wanted was to be weighed down with some heavy, philosophical read.

His mother must have told him the story a hundred times, but Alexander didn’t tire of it, although his father never raised the subject. It was wonderfully engaging, with the mother of all twists at the end, but Mr Archer, if you’re listening, my advice is this - don’t visit Russia anytime soon, that’s all I’m going to say! Some of our Senior Stylists have been with us for a long time – a couple of them from the beginning! This started so well but now it has gotten into a rut: Elena and Alex/ Sasha are 'wondering' in two separate trajectories what would have happened to them if they had taken the other boat: Jesus!
