About this deal

When it comes to actual physical fixings, these are the best fixings DIY Doctor have found for this job. Once level, use a screw or other thin pointed object to mark through the fixing holes on the hanging rail to show where you need to drill your fixing holes. If your lock/latch does not have these holes then you will likely need to change them for ones that do. Firstly, cut your batten to the correct length for your needs and then sand off the rough cut edge so it’s nice and smooth.

They also come supplied with correct sized drill bit to drill the correct size hole in the door to push the fixing in to so the surface of the plug is level with the surface of the door. x Hollow Door Regular Duty Double Fixing Hook for use in Hollow Doors, Thin Skin Partitions, Plywood and Fibreglass. For this tutorial we will be using some 2×1 inch planed batten, but you are free to use the correct size batten for your needs. If leaving the door in place and holding with screws, you can either use the hollow door fixings mentioned above or just use some standard screws, we will be using the latter in this case. Using standard screws are ok to a point but if any weight or pulling force is applied to them, in most cases they rip straight out, especially when fixing handles to hollow doors due to the forces applied to them when opening and closing the door itself.

There is a quite frankly staggering array of fixings available today for pretty much any object and any surface and the same goes for hollow doors, however as with most things, some are better than others.

Measure and mark the centre point of your batten around 30mm in from either end, drill out two small pilot holes and then countersink them ( see our guide here on pilot holes and countersinking for more information). Put the rail to one side and then pop the drill bit that comes with the fixings into a drill and drill out the two holes. Although we have used a coat hanging rail in this example, the exact same principles can be applied to any object you need to fix. Insert a piece behind the existing - but a longer piece so you can drill and fix it above and below where the hinge is located. This is not a problem at Bernards Door Furniture Direct who sell a unique type of back to back fitting .You should drill through the outer(existing) and your new piece and countersink and insert screw right through to the top insert piece. To improve things even further, Plasplug also make a hook with the fixing included to make your life even easier, this particular product can be seen in the image below. The screw heads will be a close match to the style and finish of a 6 gauge raised head wood screw making it possible to secure your handles in the best way possible and they will look good too. The latch stile of the door (the edge which swings) will usually contain a “lock block”, a solid block of wood to provide a location for mounting the handles and the lock or latch. The lock block can be quite small to save on manufacturing costs and if the door has accidentally been hung with the hinge side (the hanging stile) on the swing side, there may be no lock block to find at all!

For anything up to the weight of a t-shirt they’ll just about hold but for anything heavier a proprietary fixing needs to be used. Using round rose handles: The lock or latch will likely obstruct any fixing screws resulting in too little wood to achieve a decent screw fixing. If a lock block is present, you may find that placing a match stick into the fixing hole may allow the screw to bite again. In this situation the timber for the fixing screws will be very thin giving a poor fixing for the screws to bite. With your batten firmly secured to the door you can then add any hangers, coat pegs or similar that you etc needed.Fixing screws have pulled out and no longer bite into the timber: Check that the screw has actually been screwed into the lock block and not a hollow part of the door. Screw heads are exposed on the handles and any fixings need to match the finish: Exposed screw heads will likely be 6 gauge raised head countersunk screws where the face is rounded over instead of flat. Both solutions provide a solid and secure for a variety of items including coat hangers and hooks, toilet roll holders and door handles.
