The author also opens a doorway into something that most people might rather not consider - who takes the children who have no one else? Those last 200 pages are gripping, but I just feel this book would have benefited from reducing the cyclical thoughts and spreading out the action over more pages. A brilliant, honest, raw look at what it really means to lose someone essential and make grudging peace with what is gained in the exchange.

just like in kathleen glasgow’s previous book, i loved the first half of it so much, while the rest was really lacking when comparing the both. My mom smiles, which kills me, because I can’t resist it, and everything I thought I might say about the stack of unpaid bills kind of flies out the window. But she’s learned how to forget it through cutting; the pain washes out the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. I run so fast I almost slip on the threadbare wool rug on the floor and I go flying against her, my face landing just under her collarbone. You blink and wonder where you are, why you are in the backseat of this car, cheek plastered to vinyl, and then the world splits open again, wider than you ever thought it could, sucking your breath away.It never goes away because when you lose someone you lose some parts of yourselves and you turn into a different person.
