About this deal

This success in defending its home market (a feat claimed only by Irn-Bru, Inca Kola and Thums Up; Thums Up sold out to Coca-Cola in 1993, and Inka Kola owners Corporación Lindley S. It has been the top-selling soft drink in Scotland for over a century, competing directly with global brands such as Coca-Cola. IRN-BRU 32, launched in 250ml cans, was developed to compete in the fast growing energy drinks market. Every single product under the brand still has Ponceau 4R listed as one of the added food colorings. A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.

IRN-BRU - AG Barr

They featured the IRN-BRU logo that was first introduced in 1947, when the spelling of Barr’s IRON BREW was changed to Barr’s IRN-BRU for the first time. Many of the products were still brewed with the fermentation being cut at the point where the resultant drink was below the maximum alcohol level for sale as a non-alcoholic beverage – in those days 1. After the company started selling IRON BREW it engaged many sporting heroes of the day to endorse the brand. The drink quickly became popular in Scotland and the surrounding areas, and it wasn’t long before it was being sold throughout the United Kingdom. It’s likely this sign was produced to help market IRN-BRU in England when the drink was introduced in England. I believe that a responsible adult should have the choice as to what poisons they want to put in their body.

The manufacturer, Barrs then went on a mission to find an alternative to the food coloring that is in line with the guidelines of the Food Standards Agency. At that time, there was outrage among the Scots when the firm decided to cut down half of the sugar content in the Regular Irn-Bru Sparkling Soft Drink. Barr’s dandelion and burdock flavour, previously part of the Barr flavour range, was relaunched as D’N’B in 1993 and became the first branded dandelion and burdock product on the market. In 2008 D’N’B announced a new two-year sponsorship deal and became the official soft drink of the Rugby League, the Super League and the National League. There are also other variants of Irn Bru such as Irn Bru 1901, which is a limited edition premium version of the drink that is made using natural flavors and a higher-quality sweetener.

In recent years, Irn Bru has also been heavily promoted through the sponsorship of various sports teams and events, particularly in the realm of football (soccer). In the 1930s, the firm began a long-running series of comic strip ads entitled "The Adventures of Ba-Bru" which ran in various local papers from April 1939 until October 1970. IRN-BRU renewed its sponsorship deal with Sky and the RFL during January 2012 – the fourth year of the sponsorship deal.
