About this deal

Apply oil or acrylic straight from tube with a Colour Shaper, then carve back into paint for unusual surface effects. You can use masking fluid with any number of mediums, just make sure that you have purchased a versatile brand of masking fluid if you want to avoid disappointment.

You can move the applicator around to spread the masking fluid where it is needed and you can even drag the nozzle around to aid this process further. However, it might not be the best option as you risk leaving small traces of oil from your fingers behind and this can ultimately affect the watercolors if you want to paint again. Whilst masking tape is sufficient for most masking tasks – sometimes you need something a bit more flexible, a good example are cockpits or engine bays – demonstrated again on the Airfix Tiger Moth. Consider doing a light pencil sketch to properly plan your painting and identify where you want to preserve whites using liquid masking fluid. When its used over paint it removes some but very minimal areas of paint however it still kept a crisp line. You can apply masking fluid from an applicator bottle straight onto the artwork and move it around with a brush or you could dip your brush into a tub and go from there. This can create bubbles, that when applied to your substrate, can pop and create areas for the ink to penetrate.

Plus, members can also enjoy a range of exciting features including monthly art videos and a digital magazine library. In 2005, Charlene completed her wellness degrees in therapeutic aromatherapy and reflexology at the International School of Reflexology and Meridian Therapy. When applying the art masking fluid, you will have to wait for it to dry thoroughly before you begin to use the watercolor paints. Masking fluid is a specially formulated liquid latex and normally comes in two colours blue or white. Apart from brushes, I use things like a ruling pen, toothbrushes for splatter effects, sponges, bamboo quills, and “color shapers” which are silicone tools traditionally used for painting, blending and sculpting. If you shake your masking fluid bottle instead of stirring it, you will have more of these clumps inside the liquid. If you are using acrylic paints, it is best to test out the masking fluid as some of the products can damage the acrylic paints.

Painting around objects in this way also tends to create a build-up of color, streaks, and brush marks around the object.I’m always looking for the *perfect* tool to apply the mask, and I’ve wondered how it works on canvas. When using a paintbrush to spread out masking fluid you can use masking fluid that comes in a jar, tube, tub, or applicator bottle. Remove the masking fluid quickly once the paint has properly dried as it will lessen the risk of tearing the paper. In my painting of the coal tit below, I wanted to create wet-in-wet washes as a background to the study of the bird.
