You probably won’t notice it in a landscape picture, but in architectural shots or scenes with lots of parallel lines it will be noticeable. It's not surprising to see a fairly high level of distortion in this wide angle lens, though the distortion is consistently barrel-shaped and easily correctable in post-processing software. Only at a focal distance of 9 mm at full opening there can be, in practice, a slight degree of visible vignetting. Teleconverter MC-14 –which means that you can extend the maximum focal length to an enormous 1600mm if you want or need to.Providing a focal range of 18-36mm in 35mm terms and a 100° angle of view at the wider end, the 9-18mm lens is both compact and lightweight. Olympus does not claim any sort of weather resistance for this lens, and indeed you cannot see a rubber seal around the mount (note that no current Micro Four Thirds camera is weather sealed anyway). EX DC HSM, which at the time of writing is rather cheaper and features ultrasonic-type focusing, but loses at the wide end where every millimetre of focal length counts (9mm offers an extra 5 degrees angle of view over 10mm). If you're prepared to make a few sacrifices though, this is a decent lens if you're looking for a portable lens that'll hit 800mm. The Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro might not come with the most impressive camera hardware we have seen, but Google's software power and tuning excellence help its new flagship smartphones produce among the very best image quality we have seen on mobile devices.

According to our tests, it's at its best when the lens is used at the 9mm setting, and at its worst at 11mm and 14mm. These capable cameras should be solid and well-built, have both the speed and focus to capture fast action and offer professional-level image quality.While I'd like to see Panasonic release a new 9mm M4/3 lens, I feel that this might be nothing more that trolling.

The lens does not have a distance scale or depth of field markings, and there is only one switch, which locks the lens in its open position. Nowhere does the resolution below 1000 LW / PH and thus, many lenses, including fixed focal length, trumped by the Olympus 9-18 mm. When stowed for travel, it retracts to roughly half its in-use length, or a little more than half the length of the Panasonic 7-14mm. With the lens attached to an Olympus E-P2 camera body, focusing is essentially silent and surprisingly quick too, thanks to a solution whereby only one compact and lightweight lens element moves on focus. That's not because we don't rate them, but because we wanted to offer a balance spread of favorite choices.

The ring will turn forever, as there are no hard or soft stops in the focus ring, and there's no way to know how many ''degrees'' of turning action are available. We've all had to accept cameras and lenses getting bigger and bigger and bigger over the past few years, but this lens, on a compact PEN body, takes carry-round cameras right back to the size they ought to be! Another bonus is that the 2x crop factor of the MFT format effectively boosts the maximum magnification factor from 1:1 to 2:1, or double life-size. However, there are also plenty of differences between the two models, especially in terms of camera and imaging features. The former has an equivalent range of 16-35mm in 35mm terms whereas the latter has a slightly more restricted range of 18-35mm in 35mm terms.

ZUIKO Digital lens, the correction is highly successful, with only a minimum of "residual" barrel distortion seen in photos taken at a focal length of 9mm. If you're a fan of ultra-wideangle photography then you're in luck, because OM System makes three rather good ultra-wide zooms and we've included them all. The ring takes about 45 degrees to move through its range of focal lengths, as well there is a bit of extra play for retracting the lens into its storage state. It’s not an exaggeration to say that all three of these lenses are extremely sharp, particularly in the center.The Panasonic, on the other hand, has grippy, rubberized rings for both focus and zoom, and a grey-on-black look. Of course, the best Micro Four Thirds lenses all fit and work on MFT cameras from all manufacturers –thanks to the fact that it is an open mount, so anybody can develop optics (or indeed cameras) for it. This being a super wide-angle lens though, the vastness of the scene appearing on the screen when the lens is set to 9mm might be frightening at first. The good news is that the performance remains excellent at this value with sharpness peaking at around f/5.
