About this deal

So, if the example of there being six players you would generally expect there to be five of each number when you look at all dice on the table. To add to the complexity even more, a player can only be palafico once in a game of Perudo, yet once they have been palafico they have more rights in a round where another player is palafico. Each round starts with every player shaking their dice inside the cup and tipping them onto a table ensuring they are still covered by the cup so the other players can’t see. During this round, the player makes an opening bid and their choice of die number cannot be changed. Either in terms of the number of dice of the same number, or a higher number of dice showing a different number.

So, if someone bids for 8 threes, it is based on the prediction that there will be at least 8 dice around the table with a value of either three or one. Each round, players simultaneously shake, rattle and upend their cups in front of them, using the cup to conceal their dice from the other players. The second thing that you need to take into account when coming up with the opening bid is ones on the dice – known as aces in Perudo. They will take into account the total number of dice on the table and what they have under their own cup. This continues until someone in the game only has 1 die left which is when the rules change slightly. When any player is down to just having one die left in their cup they are declared palafico, which means that the bidding rules in that round are changed slightly so that players can only raise the quantity of dice, not the value in the bids as they go around the table.

So, for example if you were to make a bid of eight fives then it means that you are predicting a total of eight dice on the table that have either a value of five or one. The orange player plays last, and the previous players have raised the bid, announcing nine fives and ten fives. If the player that follows doesn’t believe there are that many dice as has just been stated, they say ‘Dudo’ (meaning ‘I doubt’ in Spanish) rather than guessing a number. If a player feels that there can’t possibly be a higher bid made then they shout out “dudo” instead, which means “I doubt” in Spanish. Many confuse the Incas with the Mayans; however, the Maya was a Mesoamerican civilisation, meaning they lived in Mexico and Central America.

I’ve not played any dice games before, but playing felt quite similar to card games in may ways and playing against people that you don’t know I expect has a very different vibe to it. The winner in a game of Perudo is the last player to be left with any dice, each player starting the game with a cup and five dice of the same colour. A game of guesswork, players take it in turns to bid on how many dice of a certain number are on the table. If the accusation is correct, the accused player loses 1 die which will be placed under the cup lid. The players secretly look at the number they rolled, but they should be careful, they must not change the position of the dice.

Then fill in the Rafflecopter widget, looking at what you can do to get extra entries, and one person will be chosen at random to win a copy of Perudo. matching colours, numbers, adding, subtracting, towers, making shaky shaky noises, putting them into and out of the bag……. The Palifico is a rule that applies when starting a new round and a player has just lost his penultimate die (and therefore has only one left). We got started though with the two of us walking our way through a two player game and learnt as we went on.The link on the game page links to another version of Perudo and consequently it discusses rules that are not implemented on this BGA version. My kids are a bit too young to be trying it yet, so we’re waiting my step-daughter’s next visit to test it out properly with three players. Behaviour is important, so each game is different depending on the group and I have enjoyed games with young cousins as much as with cerebral graduates of Game Theory. There is no board, no setting up and no complicated rules, so this makes the ideal after dinner or travel game. For longevity in the game, I suggest playing it safe with just a hint of bluffing only when necessary in the game.
