At the root of it all is a sinister tale of corporate greed and an attempt to cover the truth no matter what. There are better ways to introduce information to a reader than to have one character explaining things to another. With every move towards regaining identity and memory, Neal Maclean edges towards reliability, and the story moves towards resolution. Harris on the other hand is much harsher, vividly displaying the volcanic and ice-age geological upheaval which shaped this part of the world. This part of the world is known for some challenging weather, so it’s no surprise that it’s a feature here.

Selective amnesia is hard to render convincingly – your sense as a reader is usually that it has more to do with plotting convenience than neurology – but May just about pulls it off, while making the atmospheric most of his isolated locations.
