About this deal

You have multiple aspects to the story, which you know are interconnected, yet you’re not quite sure how they interconnect. With the action going on in the Outer Hebrides, there is a third mystery forming in Edinburg, where a teenage girl is making discoveries that turn her world upside down. I don’t think I’m sharing any spoilers by mentioning that the novel touches on the work of large pharmaceutical / drug companies and agro / biochemicals and stuff.

REVIEW - COFFIN ROAD by Peter May | AustCrimeFiction REVIEW - COFFIN ROAD by Peter May | AustCrimeFiction

At the root of it all is a sinister tale of corporate greed and an attempt to cover the truth no matter what. There are better ways to introduce information to a reader than to have one character explaining things to another. With every move towards regaining identity and memory, Neal Maclean edges towards reliability, and the story moves towards resolution. Harris on the other hand is much harsher, vividly displaying the volcanic and ice-age geological upheaval which shaped this part of the world. Jo, jag kände aldrig den där känslan av att sträckläsa boken som jag har haft tidigare när jag läst vissa av Mays böcker. It is like being too tired to walk any further under the blistering hot sun of the desert, even though your nostrils are filled with the sweet scent of an oasis a few staggering steps away. A teenage girl lies in her Edinburgh bedroom, desperate to discover the truth about her scientist father's suicide. The embarrassing video that goes viral leaving misery in its wake is fast becoming a thriller cliche. This part of the world is known for some challenging weather, so it’s no surprise that it’s a feature here.

Coffin Road by Peter May: Summary and reviews - BookBrowse

Selective amnesia is hard to render convincingly – your sense as a reader is usually that it has more to do with plotting convenience than neurology – but May just about pulls it off, while making the atmospheric most of his isolated locations. As Neal struggled with his lack of memory, the frustration that absolutely nothing would come to him was wearing him down.My eyes tend to glaze over when it comes to conspiracy theories and that coupled with detailed information about bees could have sent me running for the hills. Karen hated her mother, and the new man who was now living in her father’s house – and she was determined to find out what had really happened to her beloved dad. This surprised me as he has three series under his belt, a number of standalone novels and has been involved in writing for television in the UK.
