About this deal

The mounting frustration of the speaker, who awaits the coming of a peaceful and just world and “a rebirth of wonder,” is captured, often humorously, in twisted snippets of popular rhetoric.

But when helping children prepare a performance, it’s good to be aware of the different dynamics – and for them to be familiar with some basic terms. The issue of copyright prevents us from including some of the best modern children’s poetry, but you can find examples from poets such as Roald Dahl, Shel Silverstein, and Jacqueline Woodson all over the internet. This fab Performance Poetry PowerPoint is the perfect way to introduce it to your class and bring your students' poetry to life. Discuss what poetry is and find out children's previous knowledge and experience of poetry through discussion prompted by key questions: Ask the children what they think poetry is?It would also be great to sit Isabel down in a hot seat in the classroom to ask her in person where she gets all this courage from! I really like the variety of poems as they range from tongue-twisters to chants to poems with actions/sound effects and the variety of topics covered including animals, school, emotions, sport, siblings and food!

At the back of this book there are suggestions on how to perform the poems which could be useful for children who are lacking in confidence. The best poems for kids can make them laugh, cry, consider the world in a different way and even inspire them to try penning a few lines of their own. This takes poetry off the page and onto the stage, with a focus on using different tones, actions and improvisation to bring the work to life. Poetry is powerful stuff - from nursery rhymes, to song lyrics, to poetry shared on social media to verse novels. Learn some tips and advice for reading prose and poems out loud to help build confidence and enjoyment. You can also check out this great collection of arts, drama and performance resources for more fun ideas, performance poetry examples, lesson packs and activities. At the end of the book there is a recommendation of how to perform each of the poems, this is helpful to have as a teacher because it allows us to make poetry more engaging and link it to drama and performance.

This is a wonderful collection of poems inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Rachel’s beautiful poem answers this question – ‘What is the use of a book,’ thought Alice ‘without pictures or conversation? With words of encouragement to motivate your class to keep going to achieve greatness, they're sure to be inspired. And plenty that will reach across the curriculum to prepare- I found examples that could easily bring in art, drama, music, history, geography, sports, maths, science. In three powerful stanzas, Whitman catalogs the ways in which war obliterates peaceful domesticity, civil society, and even the restfulness of death.

The wide range of themes within this poetry book means there will be a poem suitable to all the children’s individual interests. I found poems that would work for small groups (3/4), that they could stage themselves very easily from the imagery provided. This could be a good basis for children developing a piece of drama / art / music based on some of the poems (I particularly like the dinosaur rap). We’ve included some lesser-known children’s poems for Christmas, along with some of the actions for those interactive rhymes.Ultimately, writing new verses give children a sense of ownership and therefore makes the whole process more meaningful. Many poems have cross - curricular links meaning English can be integrated in a fun and creative way with many other subjects and topics that the children will learn about in their duration of their school life. Gaining the confidence to contribute ideas, be creative when writing and share personal poems is key in helping KS2 children to develop. From The Same Inside: Poems about empathy and friendship by Liz Brownlee, Roger Stevens and Matt Goodfellow.
