Being an honest boy, Johnny tells his Father he doesn't deserve the praise, as he forgot to count the lambs, and that Shadow had to go back and retrieve the little creature. All books on The Good and the Beautiful Book List are deemed appropriate and wholesome, but some books have more emphasis on moral principles than others. I think you're right about the illustrations, too — I reckon Enid was envisaging Shadow as a "Lassie"-style collie.

Shame about the display of outdated and intolerant views of travellers, but Blyton was said to be a bit of a bigot (not something that struck me when I was 5) and you can't help but spot these things as an adult reader. This book kept my attention and made me laugh out loud in some places—a truly delightful, worthwhile read. My first ever to read by myself book, I loved it, so much that by the age of ten, I could repeat whole chapters off-by-heart. In the 50's and 60's Blyton was criticized for the language in her book, for being to simple, but some 300 are still in print today. Even after her death, her endearing stories continue to draw the rapt attention of children everywhere.
