The only option in our start collecting box though is hand weapon and shield, giving 2 3+ 3+ 0 rend 1 D attacks, I haven’t found Warriors very killy in any variation but they can do some work against light armour and can be considered an OK anvil. We have the lance variant from the Start Collecting box though which gives us buffs on the charge (2 damage and -2 rend) but is less effective in a prolonged melee grind with only 2 attacks and hitting on 4s. We round out the command traits here with a real winner in my opinion, as melee orientated armies live and die based off their mobility and movement. It’s meant to be monster focused, but you’ll likely find yourself leaning in on Daemon Princes and mortals instead, which on average will be better (most of our monsters kind of suck sadly). The Standard Bearer (1 in 5) adds plus one bravery giving a potential bravery 8, it’s free so you take it but I do usually find this unit is either OK or just blows up….

Ally considerations: Blades of Khorne offer several impressive buff vectors, like Bloodstokers and Aspiring Deathbringers, that can make charges easier and our melee units attack more respectively. The neck pieces are slightly different and will change up the post of the right arm that holds either the sword or axe.Don’t forget that at the end of the combat phase it can make a normal move even if still within 3″ of the enemy. Unfortunately, the nature of the kit does mean that only one of the four potential Chaos Warrior option weapon fits is available, as these are hand weapon and shield warriors only. Despoilers is probably the most conventionally powerful of the legions, providing a flexible and powerful tool to insulate yourself against ranged armies (which are popular in the meta right now) and providing a wellspring of command points to take advantage of the many powerful options we have in terms of command abilities. The chances of this happening are low enough that I think it’s a fun and flavorful inclusion on the table even if it is a distinct drawback. If you roll a 11-12 you can choose to either replace your hero with a Daemon Prince (that retains all spellcasting, command abilities and artifacts/traits) or you can heal D3 wounds on the model. The push-fit nature of the sculpts does also present a bit of a tricky painting problem as there are some hard to reach bits and sub-assembly may be a bit fiddly. This is the perfect unit to try and take objectives with, because if you manage to claim one previously held by the enemy then this unit will get a 5+ ward save until the end of the game. Powerful buffs –Your guys buff each other to make them stronger, and in the right hands few can stand against them.

The first decision you are expected to make when creating a Slaves to Darkness list is to decide on a legion, which grants you access to specific allegiance abilities, command abilities artefacts and command traits that contribute to that define the theme and gameplay of that legion. With the above you’ll end up with 10 additional Warriors for when you look to expand to 2,000 points. Armour of Tortured Souls: Worsen the Rend characteristic of attacks that target the bearer by 1 (to a minimum of ‘-‘). As well as this he can give a 6+ ward to one of your other units in this list until the next hero phase. There are also Warscroll Cards, which will only be available in this set for the foreseeable future, plus 28 Enhancement Cards, and 34 tokens to keep track of rules and special abilities.They receive a boost to their durability, which hits an iron-clad Save 3+ , while their murderous weapons and ensorcelled halberds are seriously sharpened to gain Rend -1 . We’ve gone for Host of the Everchosen as our subfaction, this will allow us to bring back slain models on 5+ instead of 6+ with our rally ability.

You could also go full madman and take Kairos Fateweaver and pair him with Archaon to fish for the slayer of kings instant death proc using Kairos’ one off ability. Even having this artefact in play can change the way your opponent plays their hero phase, as they must consider carefully how they sequence spells to try and bait out the Scroll. It has a CV of 7 and if successfully cast you may do D3 mortal wounds to an enemy unit within 18″ of the caster and visible. A mediocre selection of artefacts leaves something to be desired and the command traits are under-powered to make up for the fact you can take so many of them. With room even within these legions to play within the margins, choosing whether to promote flexibility with devotion to multiple gods, or going all-in for some powerful payoffs.

Slaves to Darkness heroes project out an aura (12” usually) from their base that gives benefits to units with the same mark as themselves wholly within said aura. We’ll discuss said table a little later on, but manipulating this table is very important to improve the chances we get a great result and negate the possibility of said hero getting turned into a Chaos Spawn. These big (really, the models are much larger than we initially thought from looking at them online) brutes can either be armed with powerful Great Axes, or a sword and Falchion. They can also target foes deeper into a group of enemies thanks to their "Riders of Doom" special ability, and improve their damage and rend characteristic by 1 if they attack after completing a charge.
