About this deal

Although only briefly touched upon, the Sealand woman is a relatively haughty and arrogant individual who believes that her race and other telepaths are far superior compared to others due to their telepathic ability. They are determined still that there is a final form to defend: soon they will attain the stability they strive for, in the only form it is granted—a place among the fossils. As a result, David and the other telepathic Waknukians he meets must flee Waknuk – which sterilizes and banishes anyone who is different – when their secret ability is discovered.

The Sealand people have emerged from their cocoons, will full butterfly wings ready to change the world. His telepathic abilities remain secret, and during the pursuit into the Fringes he joins the leading posse to give updates and warnings to David, Rosalind and Petra as they flee. Re-Birth ( The Chrysalids) was one of the first science fiction novels I read as a youth, and several times tempted me to take a piggy census. When the minds have learnt to mingle, when no thought is wholly one's own, and each has taken too much of the other ever to be entirely himself alone; when one has reached the beginning of seeing with a single eye, loving with a single heart, enjoying with a single joy; when there can be moments of identity and nothing is separate save bodies that long for one another .The Chrysalids explores intolerance and bigotry with satisfying complexity as it races toward an ending that is truly unpredictable. Uncle Axel shares some of his philosophy about how the true image of man is unknown: he points out that the Old People caused the Tribulation; thus, they were not perfect either. Sophie and David discuss the Old People, wondering whether they are the magical beings that David imagines, who can fly, or if they are simply human, as Sophie believes.

These two deaths make David nervous about his ability, but he is only forced to take action to protect himself because of his sister, Petra. The Sealand lady explains the emergence of Sealand in this way: “Then, somehow, the strain of people who could think-together began. That night David has a dream that Sophie is going to be sacrificed in the same manner in which the Strorms usually sacrifice mutant animals, in a Purification ceremony at dawn. Humans with even minor mutations are considered blasphemies and either killed or sterilized and banished to the Fringes, a lawless and untamed area rife with animal and plant mutations, and suggested to be contaminated with radiation. David lives in fear of discovery, for he is part of a secret group of children who are able to communicate with each other by transferring thought-shapes into each other's minds.

the whole work of man really seems to consist in nothing but proving to himself every minute that he is a man and not a piano-key! Soon after, Katherine and Sally are captured by the government, and David, Rosalind, and Petra are forced to flee to the Fringes, the area outside of Waknuk where Blasphemies and Deviations are allowed to live. David is unsure of where the name Waknuk comes from, suggesting that it may have been part of the name the Old People used. Never having seen such a place, he is unsure how he could dream of it, but his older sister suggests he may be dreaming of the world as it was before Tribulation.
