About this deal

What if you wanted your best friend’s two goldfish so much that you’d swap anything for them, even your father? Neil Gaiman has done a great job with making this story humorous and entertaining at the same time as the boy may seem a bit sadistic in selling his father and even tying up his sister at one point, but he has a good sense of humor as he does not realize the severity of this situation.

Evoking the image of the triple goddess of Neopaganism and connecting it to the Greek Moirai, Gaiman presents them as direct counterparts to the text’s other magical creature, the villainess Ursula Monkton, who appears as embodiment of Freud’s unruled id.The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish is a wry adventure and was the first book for younger readers from the acclaimed author and illustrator of the New York Times bestsellers The Wolves in the Walls and Coraline. To the boy's amazement, Dad is an extremely popular trading chit, and more than one exchange will have to be undone before his quest will be fulfilled. The mysterious and slightly sinister nature of the illustrations will pique children’s interest and provide the starting point for discussions around decision-making and consequences. Gaiman allows his prose to dance jovially both to the beats of the traditional and the unconventional, and his 2002 multi award-winning dark fantasy novella, Coraline, outlines the same trajectory.

I hope some of you reading this review decides to also read Neil Gaiman's THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR TWO GOLDFISH and then perhaps to gift a copy (if you had purchased it) to a child you love, or at least to a library or an organization that distributes books to children! The book was adapted by Oliver Emmanuel and Lu Kemp for a touring interactive promenade production for the National Theatre of Scotland in 2013. First, it helps the child protagonist outgrow dependence on the parents and, often in rebellion to them, begin to move toward emotional and psychological independence. The story is a retelling of the old tale of an object that gets swapped from person to person, until the original owner needs it back—and then has to swap possessions back again, step by step, to retrieve it.The portrait of the big brother and his kid sister is fantastic kinds of real, but I guess I also expected the swapping thing to be really funny, and it was meh.

I docked half a star because of a “fat joke” I could have done without, but otherwise thought this was a hoot. This inventive and comical story will strike a chord with precocious young readers and listeners alike. Originally from England, Neil now divides his time between the UK, where he is turning Good Omens, the novel he wrote with Terry Pratchett, into television, and the US, where he is Professor in the Arts at Bard College. It's a deliciously daft concept, a quality Oliver Emanuel's script and Laura Hopkins's designs make the most of; but in execution, it is also gripping.
