About this deal

As he douses the fire and they disperse, Frank can't resist trying to discover the secrets of the stick he used to ignite the fire, but when he taps it the way Gary did, nothing happens, so he leaves to join the others. In a minute or so when my cue comes, I’ll slip off the top layer of my costume, get in position and prepare to reappear in what seems like a different outfit and from what seems like a tiny space. Since more than 350 pages follow, the reader has been fairly warned to expect surprises and a few contradictions. At first, I didn’t think I’d be able to connect much with Sabine, a glamorous magician’s assistant living the a cushy life in Los Angeles with her husband and his gay lover (I’ll let you read the book yourself to learn about that situation).

The Magician’s Assistant” by Ann Patchett Thoughts on “The Magician’s Assistant” by Ann Patchett

Becoming accustomed to sad endings may be more naive than believing, now and then, in happily ever after. This is often reinforced visually and verbally, with hyper-feminised and sexualised costumes that draw the eye to her body rather than her face. Todd tells him about Nazrak, and Shandu is horrified; Nazrak is an evil demon sorcerer who has been imprisoned for centuries and seeks Shandu's wand, which can potentially grant enough power to pose a threat to the entire world. She tells Todd the wand has special powers - contrary to Shandu's instructions, he can use it whenever he pleases. When Nazrak agrees and Todd hands over the wand, the demon points out that he never said he would leave Todd himself alone, and he prepares to banish him to the vortex with Shandu.

The Magician’s Assistant by Ann Patchett | Waterstones

arsifal is dead,'' reads the startling opening of ''The Magician's Assistant,'' Ann Patchett's third novel. Marker stops by the supermarket, and we see her walking down the alleyways toward their apartment building with a single paper bag of groceries that includes a baguette, a bunch of celery with leafy green tops, and an assortment of oranges and grapefruits that have not been put in a produce bag, so they spill out of the paper bag when the bottom inevitably tears. Chatting in the bar afterwards, they always came up with ideas that were much more ingenious and complicated than the often banal reality. I have had good luck with Patchett in the past, and I have been wanting another recommendation from her collection, so this came at a good time for me. Todd apologises for disobeying Shandu, and Shandu apologises for his impatience; he has been seeking a new keeper for his wand for a long time, and believes Todd to be worthy. It isn’t until the charismatic Parsifal, Sabine’s husband and the magician she assisted for years, dies suddenly that Sabine discovers his secret: the family he claimed perished in a car accident long ago is actually alive and well in middle-of-nowhere Nebraska. This can be done most obviously through switching roles, but this is harder than it sounds, as the practicalities of performing stage tricks are also gendered in subtle and not so subtle ways. Funny sound effects create shared moments of laughter and the use of familiar tunes signals to the audience when reveals will happen and how they should respond. He then hears Shandu's voice and sees the magician's face in the reflective surface of the toaster; he urges Todd to use the rules of magic to defeat Nazrak. But these days, his fame is sadly behind him, to the point where his movies aren't even on video tapes.

The Magicians Are You Afraid Of The Dark Season 2 The Tale Of The Magicians

Underscoring (playing music quietly as a trick unfolds) helps to create rhythmic moments that build tension and mimic what might be done elsewhere with language – for example, the rule of three can apply to reveals timed to music cues to make them as successful as spoken comic punchlines. Stage magic and illusion had not, unsurprisingly, been part of my training at university and drama school, but they opened up a whole new world of stagecraft, audience interaction, pacing and physicality that helped me unlearn and relearn ways to be and communicate on stage, as well as to direct and focus the attention of audiences. When I first started working as a magician’s assistant in a late-night cabaret show in a small central-London theatre, I couldn’t have anticipated just how much it would change my performing life. Music is a shortcut to producing an emotional connection with audiences and shaping their expectations in many different ways. Patchett ended The Magician’s Assistant in precisely the right place, in my opinion, which left me feeling both satisfied and relieved this particular ending hadn’t gone the way of the others of Patchett’s I’d read!

Unfortunately, I loaned my copy to a friend (along with The Patron Saint of Liars) several years ago and never got either back. So many people have a love/hate relationship with Patchett that I’m terrified to read anything by her. Colluding with an audience that wants to believe, the magician’s assistant has her own armoury of tricks to help maintain the illusion. Sealed Good in a Can: When Shandu is trapped in the vortex, he appears in a reflection to advise Todd. Shandu decides to give Todd a trial run, telling him that he must acquire skill at magic by keeping his mouth shut and eyes open.

White-Dwarf Starlet: A long time ago, Shandu was one of the greatest magicians of his time, the talk of Broadway. For readers who have had similarly disappointing experiences with Ann Patchett’s novels, The Magician’s Assistant is different enough that I’d recommend it as a nice change of pace. I haven’t yet read this one, but your review really piques my interest and makes me want to run out and grab it as soon as I can. Good Luck Charm: Just before their performance at the children's birthday party, Shandu gives Todd the bow tie he wore to his own first performance for luck. This curiously fraught situation becomes more so once it is revealed that Parsifal had a secret history. The difficulty with this unusual romance is that it is never clear why Sabine loves Parsifal so obsessively. Now that I work as a solo act, I know that my time as a magician’s assistant gave me the confidence to emerge on stage as not just a surprise or a novelty, but as a skilled performer capable of making the magic happen herself. I’m inside a gaudily painted wooden box on a stage, trying not to move a muscle and keeping my breath light and quiet.
