About this deal

Loved the characters, the plotting was very cleverly done ensuring that you were constantly in a spin about who was doing what and why, hooked right until the very end. Each actress has her own interpretation of the character and her own secrets to hide - but this English summer weekend they will have to put aside their differences as the crimes at Aldermere turn anything but cosy. An affectionate homage to the Golden Age of Detective Fiction and a wry nod to our continuing fascination with it. Ex-child star Posy Starling is finally filming her dream role - Dahlia Lively in The Lady Detective movie. If only to provide the once and future Dahlias with the opportunity to solve either their last – or their first – case.

The Three Dahlias is intended to take readers back to the genteel but thrilling mysteries of Dame Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers and Marjory Allingham but with a contemporary twist. For the final 100 pages I was curled up into the book desperately trying to reach the end and discover the truth. It’s a lovely little mystery, very atmospheric as a murder at a fan convention (my favorite in this vein is STILL Bimbos of the Death Sun), and as an homage to the Golden Age of Mystery and as a classic country-house murder all rolled into one. The story follows three generations of actresses for one role, the role of a detective (a Miss Marple if you may) and their journey in uncovering multiple murders and a whole family of secrets. So before we proceed – I have already requested book 2 and would happily have read it straight away if it had been sat in my towering to be read piles – so that’s how much I loved it!There are several stately homes up and down the country that could have inspired the one in the book. It all starts with someone who seems to be out to get all of them – only for that person to end up getting got. When fictional death turns into real bodies, can the three Dahlias find the answers to the murders among the fans, the film crew, the family – or even in Lettice’s books themselves? In attendance: the VIP fans, staying at Aldermere; the fan club president turned convention organiser; the team behind the newest movie adaptation of Davenport’s books; the Davenport family themselves – and the three actresses famous for portraying Lettice’s 1930s detective, Dahlia Lively. If you’re looking for a light distraction filled with just the right amount of found sisterhood and murderous intentions, The Three Dahlias is quite the treat. Thank you to the publishers for this early review copy, I was sold from the front cover ‘It wouldn’t be a country house weekend without a little murder’! In attendance at Aldermere: the VIP fans, staying at house; the fan club president turned convention organiser; the team behind the newest movie adaptation of Davenport’s books; the Davenport family themselves; and the three actresses famous for portraying Dahlia Lively through the decades. While there are a whole host of characters to get to know, author Katy Watson encourages each vivid and vibrant individual to stand out in their own right. In attendance: the VIP fans, staying at Aldermere; the fan club president turned convention organiser; the team behind the newest movie adaptation of Davenport's books; the Davenport family themselves - and the three actresses famous for portraying Lettice's 1930s detective, Dahlia Lively. Each actress has her own interpretation of the character - but this English summer weekend they will have to put aside their differences, as the crimes at Aldermere turns anything but cosy. This is truly a great classic cosy crime which no doubt Agatha Christie would love to read, perhaps would even wish to have written. A contemporary mystery with a Golden Age feel, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Jessica Fellowes.

This novel intrigued me from the beginning, as it marketed itself as perfect for the fans of Agatha Christie, which I am, and it was! When fictional death turns into real bodies, can the three Dahlias find the answers to the murders among the fans, the film crew and the family - or even in Lettice's books themselves?

A contemporary mystery with a Golden Age feel, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Jessica Fellowes – and Janice Hallett and Richard Osman, of course! But anyone who was a true student of those mysteries would tell you that the convention is also the perfect setting for murder. The answer would be, of course, a murder mystery at a stately home, which is one of many reasons why The Three Dahliasreally is a perfect summer read. It’s about the people, and very much like Knives Out, about the relationships between the people and where the hidden stress points are. In attendance: the VIP fans, staying at Aldermere; the fan club president turned convention organizer; the team behind the newest movie adaptation of Davenport's books; the Davenport family themselves - and the three actresses famous for portraying Lettice's 1930s detective, Dahlia Lively. But along the way, what makes the story fun is the way that these women, literally set up to be rivals at every turn, band together in an unusual bond of sisterhood. Three rival actresses team up to solve a murder at the stately home of the author who made them famous - only to discover the solution lies in the stories themselves. But things take a nightmare turn when a prop weapon is replaced with the real thing - with almost fatal consequences for her fellow Dahlia, Rosalind King.
