In the remaining books, what was built in book 3 continues, but most of the tension in those books is not generated between the main male and female characters. I think it wise to read this yourself first, and if you are unwilling to do so, or it's not your style - err on the side of caution and delay a year longer before recommending this to your child.

Sarah J. Maas’s Life Sounds Like Pure Chaos — in a Good Way!

The book is largely devoted to establishing the characters and their world, setting up relationships, conflicts, and ethical dilemmas that will unfold in later installments. I dislike books that are solely focused on whether or not the main male and female characters will get together in the end, or if they’ll end up in bed together. Celaena's plans to bolt at the first opportunity are complicated by growing bonds of friendship, respect, and hope for a better world. I know it sounds weird but many of the romantic scenes from the fifth book up may scare sheltered children. Though she works for the powerful Assassin’s Guild and its scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, she yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam.The Prince enters her into a competition to become the King’s champion, and the book unfolds as Celaena works her way through the competition, learns more about herself, and faces down horror after horror that her world throws at her. I did read it behind my mums back she did not know that there was sex and other events, but i have already watched worse movies behind her back to. It's an imaginative, violent retelling of Beauty and the Beast, with gory battles, gruesome injuries, and violent death, plus lots of romantic longing, raging passion, and sex-drenched menace. Maas' complex tale of a teen assassin is awash in gore and dark deeds but also fraught with ethical dilemmas and the possibility of something better.

Ok I think I read half of this book when I was 13 years old, and anyway I know more or less what the book and these kinds of books are like, and I think it depends a lot on the child and his maturity. It definitely is not a mature book, but there are some things in the books that you want to be mindful of.

A character must play the starring role in a fertility rite, having ritual sex to ensure the year's crops. The main reason it's probably not appropriate for elementary students is with the language and explicit scenes aside are the violence, the sadists, and the types of people. When her competitors start dying mysteriously, one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival-and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world. I do find that at a certain age yes they should be shielded from these things but as they grow older you need to give your kid more leeway because they will eventually grow up. Oh, and no, it isn’t okay to let a “mature” prepubescent or mid way through puberty child read this book and allow it to impact and shape their view of reality and impact their imagination. It's the 2nd and 3rd book of this series that I would hesitate with- these are both definitely YA books with mature content. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament - fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Without giving anything away, while there is some romancy type stuff in the first 2 books, most of those books are focused on the mail character making her way through all of her various challenges. The first book yes, the second book maybe, but for mature sixth graders, and I think you could read the third one in sixth grade, but I would recommend that you don't read the 4th or 5th until 7th grade.

Aside from a couple of hot, long-awaited kisses (described more for their emotional flights than physical reaction), there's little action to show for all the longing. For example, I read scenes of murderers or some sex scenes but not so explicit at 13 and I took it quite well since I was always a mature person. I read this later in life, but throughout the entirety it felt very young adult and less mature than some of the content I prefer. As an adult who has read a lot of romance novels, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary or even that explicit.
