We liked the cuffs on the crew neck, which were snug but not tight nor too soft on our wrists, and the waistband on the bottoms was wide and comfy. Base layers should be able to fit nicely beneath a fleece sweater as well as a pair or workwear pants, overalls, or ski outwear. Some baselayers are made from Merino wool, a natural material that’s naturally odour resistant, but it doesn’t dry as quickly as polyester.

To date in 2023, Tilton has tested women’s base layers on 59 days and throughout 177 hours of recreation in the backcountry and frontcountry. It’s thin enough to easily go under sweaters or fleeces for added warmth, and it’s nice enough to wear on its own with a vest on warmer days. The relaxed neck gives you room to breathe while the striped pattern leans into an effortless French girl aesthetic. Though we haven’t tested this one yet, the Backcountry Airblaster Merino Ninja Suit is another onesie option on the market. In those conditions, it was excellent, with its snug high neck to fend off the chill and thumb loops that kept our wrists covered.We also couldn't help but notice the slower drying speed (one hour in the spring sun) during our spring testing period. But be sure to check the washing instructions before you put your baselayer in a hot wash, because Merino can shrink at high temperatures. We found this layer more versatile than the rest, thanks to a hood, a 1/4 zipper, and thumbholes which can all be utilized to maximize warmth. It’s the warmest fabric choice for low-intensity outdoor activities like ice fishing or spectating ice skating.
