Thoughts: I’m a huge fan of Bunnahabhain’s standard 12-year-old bottling. In terms of core range, age-stated releases, it’s about the best value for money you’ll find today. The idea of a cask strength version seemed to hold a lot of potential but I did wonder how much better it could be, given the impressive standard of the original. As it turns out, the original could be improved upon. Quite a bit, in fact. The sherry character seems more intense in the cask strength version. In fact, everything seems to have been dialled up a notch. The raisins are juicier, the caramel richer and the peppercorns spicier. It’s just altogether… bigger. This deep russet gold, natural cask strength 12 Year Old is a celebration of the Bunnahabhain house style. Delivering big hits of chocolate, spice and concentrated dried fruits.

Bunnahabhain Distillery dates from the Victorian age. It was established in the north-east of Islay in 1881. In those days, that part of the island was largely empty. The village that now surrounds the distillery was built purely to accommodate the workers. All deliveries were made by sea with fuel and supplies dropped off and whisky shipped off to the mainland to be sold to the blenders and bottlers of the big cities. It wasn’t until 1960 that a road was constructed to link the distillery with Port Askaig. Matured on the remote, north-eastern coastline of Islay, and produced using natural spring water from the Margadale spring, this 12-Year-Old Cask Strength is an undiluted celebration of the distillery’s hugely popular Bunnahabhain 12-Year-Old. With each cask being different, natural variation can occur from one batch to the next, however we take great care to assess the spirit from each cask individually to ensure the character of the spirit has not lost its identity. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.Nose: Initial notes of creamy milk chocolate, red berries and sweet dried fruit are balanced with classic Oloroso spiciness and a hint of cloves.

The mouthfeel and texture of the whisky increases, showing off the balance of the spirit and the wood, but in a more concentrated form. The nose shows the sherry influence immediately with dark stone fruits and raisins. The longer it sits, the greater the influence. There seems to be a bit of brine and pepper as well. Find out more about international delivery It all sounds great but as any visitor to Islay will tell you, the island doesn’t appear to be blessed with an abundance of trees. I can’t help but wondering exactly how much wood chip needs to be burned every day to produce an output of 2.5million litres per year and where it’s all going to come from. What if Islay can’t supply the full requirement? Will it be shipped in from elsewhere? Won’t that create more emissions just to bring fuel in? In any case, I think it’s great to see steps being taken. Whether they prove to be the right steps, only time will tell. I sincerely hope Bunnahabhain’s new system works exactly the way Distell say it will. At this stage, any and all attempts at progress should be welcomed.

Bunnahabhain launches 2022 12 Years Old Cask Strength

Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. The palate is pepper, baking spice especially clove. The sherry notes lead to plum and dark cherry. The brine also follows the nose. Palate: Toasted nuts, salted caramel and chocolate covered raisins are intertwined with crisp apple, poached pears and a dusting of cinnamon. Roasted nuts and spice lead the way with cinnamon and cloves fading to reveal soft notes of butterscotch, toffee, sultanas and a gentle hint of coffee. Taste: Arrives with the same dried fruits character… Raisins, sultanas, prunes. Salted caramel. Peppercorns. More chocolate. Oak char. Malty, cereals on the finish. Some fresh leather. With water there’s vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce.

Our single malts are natural products and a lot of the wonderful flavours enjoyed in Bunnahabhain 12 are a consequence of the cask wood extract being released into the spirit over the aging period.
