About this deal

Mepiform is designed for use with old and new hypertrophic scars and keloids. It may also be used on closed wounds, helping to prevent the formation of hypertrophic scars and keloids in the future. Mepiform is an effective treatment for scars caused by caesarean section. In an observational study undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of Mepiform on post-burn and other traumatic scars of both pediatric and adult patients (n=87) in an outpatient setting, Cain et al found that Mepiform might help to enhance patient compliance, as well as improving scar quality and patient comfort. Scars are disfiguring and can interfere with the normal functioning of the skin and other organs affected. They are more likely to form where the primary cause of the scar persists, where there is continued inflammation and when the scar takes a long time to heal . Continued fibrosis in the skin leads to scarring and, potentially, disfigurement as a result of progressive deposition of matrix. When applying Mepiform, make sure the area is dry. When used together with ointment or cream, ensure the dressing covers an area beyond the cream.

Middelkoop et al found the use of Mepiform was associated with a significant improvement in hypertrophic scars in a study involving 12 patients.Mepiform is designed for the management of hypertrophic and keloid scars. It can also be used as a prophylactic therapy on closed wounds for prevention of hypertrophic or keloid scarring. Topical silicone has empirically been shown to have positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. Mepiform shall optimally be worn 24 hours a day. It is recommended that Mepiform is removed once a day, e.g-when showering or bathing, for inspection and washing of the skin. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform shall be used for 6 months depending on the condition of the scar. The length of treatment time will differ from person to person and depends on the condition and the age of the scar. First results may be seen already after 2 months, however the improvement of the scar may continue for up to a year under treatment.

It is not clear exactly how Silicone works on a scar. Some research suggests that the silicone creates a protective barrier over the scar which allows it to mature while helping to prevent production of excess scar tissue. The silicone layer also assists with hydration of the scar. Where can I get silicone gel sheets?Mepiform is a thin, discreet and flexible dressing consisting of a laminate (polyurethane and nonwoven) covered with a soft silicone gel. Widened scars appear when surgical wounds are stretched as a result of skin tension during the healing process. They are generally pale in colour, flat, soft and symptomless, but can be aesthetically displeasing .

Topical silicone has widely been shown to have a positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. Mepiform dressings should be worn for a minimum of 12 hours daily, and if possible 24 hours per day, with twice daily washing. The dressing can be reapplied. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform treatment should begin soon after surgical closure, when the incision has fully epithelialised, and be continued for at least 1 month. Mepiform can be used on newly healed closed wounds to prevent the formation of red and raised scars. Presentation

Mepiform can be used as soon as the wound is completely closed. Do not use on open, infected wounds or over scabs. In Majan’s randomised controlled trial of 11 patients with postoperative hypertrophic scars, participants were randomly allocated to treatment with Mepiform or ‘left alone’. Patients treated with Mepiform showed greater and more rapid improvements than those in the non-treatment group, as measured by the Vancouver Scar Scale. Commenting on their results, the author conclude that, as Mepiform is self-adhesive and its use limits damage to the stratum corneum on removal, it gives it an added value compared with non-adhesive silicone gel dressings. You can use more than one dressing and join pieces together edge to edge. You can also cut the dressing to the size and form desired.
