About this deal

This lesson plan provides activity ideas to accompany the delightful children’s book Oliver’s Vegetablesby Vivian French.

I was asked to read this book by children aged 3 - 4, who found the story very funny due to Oliver only liking chips to eat. This book would be perfect for a child with difficulty trying new foods to encourage them and for a child that is interested in gardening like mine is! Next, show them examples of vegetables representing each part of the plant and ask them to sort them into different piles by part. The discovery process he goes through, trying new vegetables with his grandfather makes for a gentle read with children. Vivian French is the author of over two hundred books, including the wildly popular series Tales from the Five Kingdoms. This book is perfect in encouraging kids that are having difficulty with trying new foods and for kids that are interested in gardening. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc. This is the third Oliver book apparently, although the first one I have read, not that it matters with these books.

Along the way he discovers many other types of vegetables and learns that he likes more than just French fries. We have an array of resources and activities that go wonderfully in conjunction with the brilliant storybook.

Oliver insists that he only eats chips, so his grandfather tells him to find the potatoes to make these. Vivian teaches part time at Edinburgh College of Art, and is one of the two founding members of the PictureHooks programme supporting Scottish illustrators. Small taste sessions after each new vegetable are a must and it really encourage children to become curious about new and exciting vegetables. My grandchildren (aged 3 and 4) love this little book as a bedtime story and I bought a further copy as a birthday present for another 4 year old who absolutely loves vegetables and helps her grandparents to grow them.

Although the story is aimed at children who won't eat veg, it is delightful and appeals to all - veg and non veg eaters. An excellent book for parents with slightly fussy children, which also introduces the days of the week.

My 7 year old boy got this book for doing his summer project book review and to learn about green vegetables! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Neither my children nor any others I know would have been fooled by Grandad's ploys - they would probably have enjoyed looking for them, but their mouths would still have remained firmly clamped shut in the face of spinach, peas, etc.
