About this deal

A trip to the local swimming pool begins with trepidation as Nina wears a bikini and a European holiday tan, and Laura squeezes into her old bathing suit with an anchor on her flat chest. I wish we could have found out what happened to all the other girls we encounter at the home, and the ending was a bit unrealistic, but Laura's story is a touching one nevertheless. Laura often stays for dinner at the Bertrams which is full of laughter, plenty of food fit for a restaurant, and a delicious pudding for afters. Aspirations to keep up with a wealthy friend are agonizing, and result in a huge mistake that she doesn't even realise she's making.

Set in the 1960s, this compelling YA novel follows Laura, who finds herself pregnant at the age of 14. The story gripped me and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Laura went through without having to think too hard. When Nina starts waving at some boys on the diving boards, Laura is horrified, but does her best to look sixteen like Nina is trying to pull off.

Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. The rear of the book includes a note on sexual consent and some (UK only) organisations and resources available for anyone needing support or information. She felt shame around it but couldn’t figure out what had happened and therefore couldn’t talk to anyone about it. Laura and Nina's friendship begins to falter in the next few months as Laura realises how controlling her friend is.

Holly BourneNever did I think upon reading this book that I would be so connected, invested and intensely engrossed as I was.The second half of the novel introduces new characters all caught in the same situation and all thrown into the pain and turmoil of forced adoptions.

Sent away to save them from shame, Laura meets girls just like herself, whose families have given up on them - and they become a family for each other at the most difficult time in all their lives. The authors writing perfectly encapsulated the innocence and young nature of the main character, Laura, expertly writing her character and capturing the confusion, whirlwind and uncertainty that was being a young, unmarried, pregnant girl in these times. One of Britain's bestselling children's authors, with over 25 million books sold, Wilson is a former Children's Laureate and creator of Tracy Beaker. The tiny illustrations that accompany the beginning of chapters remind readers the tale follows a young girl, as Laura’s advanced literacy enables readers to forget her youth. Her prefab home is undoubtedly the nicest in their area, but still is in a street dubbed ‘Shantytown’ by her Grammar School classmates.
