About this deal

Hardcore gamers may find it too light and with a lack of challenge but it doesn’t stop Isle of Skye being a great warm up game preparing you for something a bit heavier.

It is pleasant to build in relative peace (and to ignore connecting roads), arranging tiles just so and trying to find the best ways to score points. I’ve played most of my games over lunch breaks at work, and Isle of Skye is ideally suited for this. New players get an easy entry to the cirtical acclaimed game Isle of Skye - From Chieftain to King by Alexander Pfister and Andreas Pelikan with this new BIG BOX edition. It always puts the players in a situation that requires unique decision-making processes like no other game has. Isle of Skye takes the relatively tame strategic decisions of Carcassonne and kicks them to the curve. Players score victory points by fulfilling objectives on scoring tiles, from coins, and from fulfilling objectives on scrolls.

A slow and only mildly challenging AI coupled with the occasional crashing of the game in multiplayer mean that the app version is held back compared to the physical game. Secretly and simultaneously, behind their screens, players assign their ax token to one tile (which will be discarded) and assign a value of at least 1 coin to the other two tiles. The right choice there can supercharge your points engine, or hugely influence the tiles you select in the future. Each tile will display some of these in various configurations but also may have buildings, animals or other decorations that have point scoring potential. Placement rules are incredibly simple, you just have to match the terrain type, roads can lead to dead ends, but terrain must match.

Not only are you randomly selecting four scoring titles from 18 every time you play, but how the tiles combine together makes a big difference. Despite only bringing the common tile-placement mechanic with landscape printed on it, Isle of Skye still delivers something interesting from its core box. Each player is dealt the same set of six “half-tiles”, whose jagged corners (on the hypotenuse of the triangle) cannot touch other tiles.

In the tile-laying game Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King, 2-5 players are chieftains of famous clans and want to build their little kingdoms to score as many points as possible — but in each game only four of the sixteen scoring cards will be scored.
