About this deal

You are absolutely correct in your assessment that palates change over time, and I look forward to you letting me know if you warm up to this one. The aroma of sherry is melded into the molasses, and I would not disagree very firmly with someone those who believes the nose should have been scored even higher than I have done. I like what I am tasting (a lot actually), but my feeling is that the PX Sherry and the Rum battle for my attention rather than coexisting. But since aging spirits in “wet casks*” is becoming more popular – even in single malts – and the brand is owned by a sherry bodega, I’m inclined to think that this is more likely. The bottling serves up delightful notes of leather, sweet dried fruits, molasses, crumbling brown sugar, dark vanilla, chocolate, nutmeg, orange peel, walnuts, cloves, dark oak, toffee, and espresso.

With that said, I can see some people getting into rum via trying this, just like a lot of current rum drinkers got into rum via Ron Zacapa “23. This Rum has a fair share of fans on the Ministry as well as Forrest’s recommendation at High Times, which I took on my last field trip there. Firstly it is aged for 5 years in the Carribean in American oak cask then shipped over to Spain to be aged for a further 5 years in two different styles of sherry cask. The rum matures in American sherry casks in the Caribbean for the first five years, until it is shipped to Europe, Spain, at the end of that time. The finish is long and persistent, with a sweet touch that makes it perfect for pairing with desserts or for drinking as a digestif. These original works may not be copied or reused in any way whatsoever without the permission of the author, Chip Dykstra.

Vanilla, cinnamon, allspice , nutmeg and marzipan all seem to find their way into the breezes as does a nice impression of toasted coconut and orange marmalade. They don’t go into more details such as which distillery/ies the Barbadian rum came from, and what marks were used to make the Guyanese rum. In fact, if I tasted this spirit blind, it might be hard for me to decide whether I was sampling a rum or a sherry.

In addition, its alcohol content of 40% makes it a powerful but balanced drink that can be enjoyed on any occasion. To my understanding, they will only tell a consumer that their rum has additives if the consumer asks. This rum is too sweet and has to much taste of the PX Sherry in my opinion, but it has been very enjoyable to follow the development of this rum from the base via 5 + 3 to 5 + 5 and see how this aging (and eventually some added flavors) have changed taste and appearance. But, what if a consumer – who is new to rum and doesn’t know about this dishonest rum industry practice – doesn’t ask? But keep with it, the sweetness is obvious but the taste and smell does mature as you you make your way through the bottle.
