Please note that as the items we sell are antique or vintage, most of them will have been used for the purpose that was intended. These Crowns were produced to commemorate the Festival of Britain which took place on the South Bank of the River Thames in London opening on the 4th May 1951 for five months which was literally 100 years after the Great Exhibition in London'€™s Hyde Park from May to October 1851. Crowns had been a circulating coin, and were produced regularly until 1902, the first year of Edward VII's reign. Around that time many Europeans countries had similar sized silver coins which made them good for international trade as they were essentially interchangeable. It was made of 22 carat gold ("crown gold") and has a value of five shillings (a quarter of a pound).

This was one of only two crown types issued during the reign of George VI, with the other released in 1937 to mark the king’s coronation). I have also got both the 'normal' 1960 Crown,plus an impaired example of the 'Polished Dies' 1960 Crown,which is one extremely difficult coin to find.
