The company say that the arrays of round ports are of a "revolutionary design" which "improves the acoustic transparency and results in a more natural uncoloured sound". It's a bold claim to which I'll return later, but there is a distinct similarity between the round ports used here, and those employed in Rode's excellent high-end TF5 small-diaphragm capacitor mics. I'd be very happy to use the NTG5. It really is an extremely good-sounding, highly effective, reliable and cost-effective location recording mic...

V1.6- Note that there are some head-unit photos missing, I will add as I get hold of the various units. Extremely lightweight (just 76g), short shotgun microphone (just 203mm), making it far easier to handle on set than other shotgun mics, especially when used on a boom pole. The NTG5 features a short, super lightweight aluminium body (just 76g!), making it one of the most compact professional shotgun mics on the market. Sound is a very subjective judgment, and everyone has their definition of “natural-sounding” or “warm sounding” microphone. But there’s also a kind of “industry standard” for sound, which is what you hear every day from TV and in the cinema. Therefore, you will mostly see Sennheiser, Schoeps, DPA or RØDE microphones chosen by audio professionals and filmmakers, for two reasons: first, people in audio postproduction are much more familiar with the sound of these microphones and know much better how to deal with them. Second, the ear of the audience is much more trained for the sound from these microphones. One of the latest additions to this section of Rode's microphone offerings is the NTG5, a short-shotgun or 'line and gradient' mic billed as the new flagship model and derived directly from the slightly larger (and more expensive) NTG3. In comparison, though, the new mic is about 20-percent less expensive, 50mm shorter, and almost half the weight! And that price reduction is even more impressive given the included complete — and pleasingly high-quality — accessory kit, which allows the mic to be used on the road, straight out of the box. Now that's a very refreshing and enlightened approach that genuinely enhances the product's value for money and practicality, and especially as it's not at the expense of technical excellence. The NTG5 boasts some impressive technical specifications and technological innovation too. Grab Yer 'Cote I mention ‘co-operation’ as some dealers might not have experience in how to actually do this or be particularly interested in doing it.

There have been two manafacturers of Audio-20 units, Mitsubishi and Panasonic. The Mitsubishi units do not support Car Play or Android Auto. The latest Panasonic units can support Car Play and Android Auto- but it is not clear when the NTG5*1 Panasonic units started supporting it. The NTG5*2 Panasonic units seem to all support Car Play and Android Auto.

In my first tests, I was really quite surprised by how much hotter (louder) the microphone was than the Sennheiser K6/ME66 or the Deity S-Mic 2. This means that I can set my mixer or DR-100 inputs to a lower level for the same overall loudness, reducing any hiss that might be caused by the preamps in those devices. The microphone itself only has 10dBa of self-noise making for very clear recordings – as you can hear in the videos above. The final button is the filter control. Pressing this once will engage the 75Hz high-pass filter (left Led illuminates). Pressing it again will select the 150Hz filter (middle LED illuminates). A third press will disengage the high-pass filters (left and middle LEDs off). A long press (3 seconds) will engage the high frequency boost (right LED illuminates). This can be used in conjunction with the high-pass filters. Another long press will disengage the high boost.

The NTG5 is a dream for boom operators who find themselves on long, demanding shoots, or filmmakers and sound recordists looking for a more portable and lightweight rig that delivers broadcast-grade audio. The Perfect Location Recording Mic The VideoMic NTG(with the WS-Chroma and RØDE Connect) being used in a gaming streamer setup Mounting a Shotgun Microphone Technologie de polarisation RF et vernis de tropicalisation, pour garantir une parfaite performance dans des conditions difficiles I have seen a lot of discussion on this on the internet and have a few sources that i have come to the following conclusion: Most W212 E Class’ have the NTG4.5/7 unit or possibly NTG 4.0. The later facelift models seem to have the NTG5.1 units which is ideally the one we want and the subject of my situation.

Final Thoughts

All you need to do is plug the microphone straight into the USBport of the computer and you’re ready to start recording. In terms of the mic's tonality, the NTG5 sounds very clean and crisp, with excellent dialogue intelligibility when pointed accurately on-axis to a speaker. However, while I completely understand the decision to roll off the low end — something which definitely enhances usability in the field — I'd have preferred that to be controlled by a switchable filter so that a fuller, deeper tonality could be captured when desired in the appropriate circumstances, such as indoors and when recording studio voiceovers.
