Funniest bit was washing up procedure last night when I was in goal for the cutlery that was getting thrown at greater and greater speed and cups and managing to catch them all – it was good fun. Robert has been bleeding the radiators which is obviously important for keeping the workforce warm over the winter! And Lauren has been doing chart corrections. In 1948 she was sold to Estonian refugees not wanting to be repatriated to Russia after WWll, and in July she set off for the USA with 69 men and women and at least ten children on board. She put into Dover, crossed Biscay in a storm and suffered damage; was saved by a Spanish three-masted ship and escorted into Pontevedra, north of Vigo. The fishing village helped the vessel to be repaired and the crew to recover. Next, she put into Madeira; she suffered more damage in a storm near the Bahamas; and finally on 20th September 1948 was escorted into Wilmington, North Carolina. The crew had no papers and the story goes that after their harrowing Atlantic crossing they pleaded for one night’s rest on board before being interviewed and possibly turned away. That night, Prolific sank in Wilmington Bay – readers can speculate as to the cause but it did mean that the Americans had no choice but to let them stay! The crew were then taken to Ellis Island to be processed as immigrants. They set off late on Wednesday after a very close encounter with a dolphin in Portland, and had a lovely gentle sail to the Solent, and a late arrival into Cowes.

Sea staff and volunteers

Sea staff who want to sail next season: remember that if lots of volunteers all apply for the same dates, priority will go to people who have helped us in other ways – coming to refit, raising money, introducing new clients etc!

In January 2016, our previous vessel John Laing was named Sail Training Vessel of the Year by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and the Association of Sail Training Organisations. It went really well. The trip unlike what I had had in mind. Completely something different and out of my comfort zone however, very grateful. I came along and made new friends!”

Our charitable work

Next day was a really big sail, all the way round the south of the Isle of Wight to Cowes. They had another beautiful sunset and people took a keen interest in learning about navigation buoys and cardinal markers as they passed.

She has the potential for up to 26 berths but, fitting in with coding requirements, we tend to sail with 12-15 young people (and group leaders where appropriate) plus 6 or 7 adult staff and volunteers. After that, a couple of adult day sails allowed us to sail with sponsors and donors as well as to invite representatives of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and Trinity House, as well as our local MP, plus some friends and family of the OYT South team.

adult voyages and volunteer training – does anyone not eligible for youth voyages want to sail our beautiful boat? MDL will aim to arrange informal chats with shortlisted candidates at one of their marinas so ideally anyone nominated should live within reach of an MDL marina. These are open to anyone aged 18+ but priority will be given to people who are interested in finding out more about volunteering with the charity and potentially hoping to use the voyage to earn a recommendation for volunteer training (especially those who have not had the opportunity to earn a recommendation on a youth voyage), as well as current volunteers looking for some extra training on a voyage where they can focus on their own skills without the responsibility of supervising young people at the same time.
