About this deal

Chauncey Feith, an army recruiter whose family ties kept him out of the trenches, is trying to make a name for himself. Convincing himself that he is acting with patriotic zeal, he harasses the elderly German language professor at the college, and the librarian who has German poetry books on the shelves. Unquestioned xenophobia is the driving force behind Chauncey's actions.

The characters were pretty one-dimensional. Even when Coulter tried to develop some of them, the transformation came across flatly. I didn't realize that L.J. Ross was starting a new series this year and I was so happy by this surprise! Engagingly told, this was a nice addition to the books already published by this author. While hardly a police procedural, it did have the right amount of mystery for a work of women's fiction. So if you're in the market for a story about something that could easily happen to any of us a tragic incident resulting in psychological issues that also includes a touch of mystery, give this book a whirl. I liked the super small town feel of the community, and the relationship that the heroine had with her boss and landlady was lovely. My only complaint is that it could've been longer and the ending felt very rushed. La valle è così stretta che viene chiamata ‘terra d’ombra’ perché a farla da padrona è proprio l’ombra: This is my first Alice Clark-Platts book I have read but it certainly won't be the last as I simply adored the flawless writing, the great story structure and especially the length of the chapters which were all so well rounded and made the plot very easy to follow. The descriptions were so vivid and evocative that I really did feel I was on that island, I could see all the scenes so clearly and almost felt that sugary white sand in between my toes. In the same vein as popular television series The White Lotus, The Cove is the most recent release from author Alice Clark-Platts. A tropical paradise awaits the reader in this twisted tale of escape, survival, tension, deception and violence.

Mini break, big break

The novel takes place in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina in 1918. Laurel Shelton lives in the cove with her brother Hank, who has just returned home from fighting in World War I and is missing a hand. Laurel stumbles, unnoticed, upon a man sitting alone in the woods playing a flute. A visit by Laurel to her parents' graves reveal that she and her brother are both orphans; their deaths contributed to the local belief that Laurel is a witch.Like others have said, the dialogue was pretty unbelievable. The only place I could imagine hearing people talk like that is in bad cop shows. Louise was born in Northumberland, England. She studied undergraduate and postgraduate Law at King’s College, University of London and then abroad in Paris and Florence. She spent much of her working life in London, where she was a lawyer for a number of years until taking the decision to change career and pursue her dream to write. Now, she writes full time and lives with her husband and son in Northumberland and Edinburgh. She enjoys reading all manner of books, painting, travelling and spending time with family and friends. June 6, 2017 - I was alerted by GR friend Linda to the following from April 2017 - WCU's Ron Rash wins Guggenheim Fellowship - Rash deserves all the recognition there is, he is a national treasure.
